Hey I have to make a banner for my forum, so that someone else can place as an ad on their site. I'm just wondering what are the most effective kinds of ads? Does anyone know or anything worked really well for them?

is it those ad-games (like click on monkey for prize)? should i make a nice flash one? or just text?

Most sane people find those ads incredibly annoying, but then again, those using them are trying to trick you into clicking them, so.. :/
But many of us just block all animations because they're pretty much all annoying.
Definitely don't use sound, like that stupid one with the fly buzzing.
I'd suggest not using any animation at all, unless it's very subtle, like an occasional glint or sparkle somewhere, or a cool mouseover effect if you use flash.

I would say, if it's for a specific forum, find out the color scheme of that forum and design your ad banner with a color and style that will stand out against that color scheme, yet not be obnoxious.

For example, you wouldn't want a purple and yellow banner on an forum that was all shades of grey.
That's as bad as typing in all caps in a desperate attempt to get attention.

Also, make sure any text on it is readable, even at high screen resolutions.
I'd say at least 1/2, and probably more like 2/3 of all the affiliate banners and even many of the sigs I've seen are crap because they use pixel fonts or close to it.
If people can't read it, most aren't going to click it to find out what it is.
And those silly (and obnoxious) scrolling affiliates codes a lot of people use just make reading it worse.

Thanks, that actually helped quite a bit....

I'm going to put sound over the mouseover though :D ..but maybe nothing annoying...perhaps a familiar persian song or something that will get most people like "hey i like that song" and click....
