An earthquake estimated at 6.7-magnitude has hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which was so badly hit in recent quakes. It seems that area is becoming more active  |

Remember the richter scale works so that an 8.0 is tens times as powerful as a 7.0, so this earthquake was about 1/500 as powerful as the one that caused the tsunami in December. |

I believe this was expected to an extent. I remember after the last one, they mentioned that there would be 'aftershocks' of this magnitude in the coming weeks. I would wager a guess that this is one of the ones they were discussing. It's shame that these people keep getting hit like this though.

the richter was scraped a few years ago. found to have flaws in it I think. earthquakes are mesaured by something else now (not via the richter scale). let me see if I can find the book where I read that. |

I knew it. It was gonna be scraped. it was too simple. It was just like: Earthquake: Rate me from 1-10!! |

yes. but that's one reason sciencetists are working on buildings that are more resistent to earthquakes even 9/10s (on the richter if it was still used). look on 'www.howstuffworks.com' serch for 'smart-buildings'. |
