But do you guys know how to type correctly? Using the "home-row positions"? Not just two fingers mashing away at the keyboard?

Last time I tested for how fast I typed, I was going through training on how to type fast. They gave me a paragraph of random text and made me type it for a period of 5 minutes. (If you finished, you just started from the start again)

boy was it hard to concentrate for 5 minutes typing, since the longer you type, the less and less words per minute you get. So, I ended up having 44 words per minute.

Yeah, your mom and grandma, who were professionals, only typed 115-120wpm.
Granted, one can type slightly faster on the newer equipment of today, but not much.
Either you guys don't know how to measure properly, or you're full of it.

I type the correct way, and all the kids in my class are amazed at how fast I type. I usually make a lot of mistakes. I voted 91-100 WPM.

~220.

I am known as a typing demon @ high school. No one has beaten me (this Korean kid got really close)

I guess being Asian gives you a natural advantage? :w00t:

Or is it that spending 20+ hours on the PC? :r (JK  )

 Sure... thats 1 word per 0.27 seconds.. thats around 4-5 words in a second

I can see by a quick Google search that most of you are probably measuring your speed improperly.
To do it correctly, you have to compensate for mistakes.
So, if you type 100 wpm consistently with no mistakes, your speed is 100wpm.
For every mistake you make, you have to add 5 seconds, then you add the total time for mistakes to the 60 seconds, divide by 60, then multiply that by how many words you typed.
So if you typed 100 words in a minute but made 10 mistakes, your wpm would be:
10*5 = 50
50+60 = 110
60/110 = 54.5

So you'd have 54.5wpm, not 100.
With as many mistakes as I see some of you make, I'd hazard to guess that your true typing speed actually comes out to be more like 20wpm. :r

If I didn't care about making mistakes, I could probably manage over 200 easily enough, but it's actually more like 80-100, depending on circumstances.

I have no idea.
Don't really care eighter
Just know it is(of was) fast enough to pass those weard typing-tests I had to do when I was a kid.
(But then I just had to remake some weard paper and if I had it done in time I passed. Typing something like this takes way longer :/ )

Just went to the above site and got 54 WPM  but no typoes thank you very much. I did have to backspace in the beginning before finishing a word cus I noticed I was typing "survival" incorrectly.
I don't know if the formula they use already includes what Phrank mentioned but I have a feeling I typed more than 54 words doing that text.

I was on a typing course, and we measured with hits per minute.. I got 190..

I also did some test in a different topic, and I got as far as 59 WPM with it.

EDIT: It was the same one that Mealroth posted.
