Hey I just have one question that has been bothering me. I want to buy an Alienware Area 51 7700 but I don't know which graphic card is better or just gives better performance. I don't know if there bother like the same or is there something that distinguish both?

wow thats a lie and u know it. take this from a certified geek.

the differences between ATi and Nvidia, may seem small to some people but are HUGE when it comes to performance.

first off the main difference is that ATi cards are hardware based while Nvidia are morely considered Driver based. the difference here is, your performance on an ATi is dictated by what card you are running. most likely the x800 if you are smart. Nvidia on the other hand has been in the business so long that although there hardware is OH SO godly, there driver code is damn near perfect. Ati actually has TERRIBLE 1st party driver code and has had alot of problems in the past. if u go ATi get a Sapphire ATi x800 with Sapphire drivers.

next, we have architecture. Ati although is good, its driver code like i mentioned is awful (1st party) and requires a bit of handling to set it properly. Nvidia has been around for so long that darn near EVERY video game on the market post the year 2000 has been using Nvidia architecture. main reason for this is the BASIC architecture for almost ALL videogames these days are built off of the Nvidia GeForce 2 64mb Graphics card.

third reason: Nvidia have way more options for performance. a 6600 GT card can keep up with the 6800 line of cards and will still save you money. for peak performance, you have 3 options, 6800, 6800 GT, and 6800 Ultra. the 6800 standard can hit speeds of the ultra but isnt as consistent (i have this one) and is much more cost effective if you arent overclocking or running doom 3 for 4 days at a time.

personally, go with Nvidia, i cant urge that enough. get a 6600 GT and be ahppy, or a 6800. the 6600GT smokes the x800 in benchmarks, and the 6800 li9ne smokes the x850(has yet to be released) and the x850 has had more time to be designed.

more games are certified Nvidia games as well. check out there website

I have a ATI card in my laptop and its only 64mb but it has great performance and works very well! So recently when I built my first computer I also went with ATI. I got a ATI 9200SE with 128mb with hookups for LCD and the old analog monitors. It has worked very well!

I would go for ATI!

:X ATI is the worst brand ever if you ever think you will use Linux. They have terrible Linux support.

I have found NVidia cards to be superior in every way. I have used at least 4 of each.

I like NVidia. They have GREAT driver support, and the drivers are updated often. And most of the driver updates actually boost performance, instead of just new features or whatever.

I have an NVidia GeForce FX 5200 (128mb). This is an older card, not nearly as good as the top-end ones out there, yet I'm able to play all of the newest games. For example, Doom 3, one of the most power-hungry games out there right now, works beautifully on my card. And I was even playing the demo version, and demos usually don't have as much support for different cards as the full versions.

stevio wanna know the reason for that? even Doom 3, World of Warcraft, Painkiller, and Half Life 2 were all built off the GeForce 2 64Mb architecture. and all of the newer revisions of the Nvidia cards use the same basic architecture just modified over the years of techinical advancement
