Post Count?; Got me thinking a little...

Just a wierd question here...why does everyone find post count so attractive? I really don't understand, like people set post count goals for themselves, and the staff complain that members spam to raise their post count. What is the big deal? Did I miss something?

I think I have a couple theories about the matter, though I'm not really sure...perhaps a larger number makes people look more important or powerful? Or maybe people take you more seriously if you look more experienced? All silly ideas, in my opinion.

I just sometimes wish that the idea of post count had never even been dreamed up in the first place. That way, there would be far less spam on all forums, and people wouldn't care so much about position. I mean sure, post count may encourage people to be active, but it does it for all the wrong reasons. You should be visiting a board because you enjoy the community, not because you want to look cool, or whatever it is that makes that little number so attractive.

It's so wierd to think that people could spend so much effort trying to bump a few pixels around...in the end, that's all that's happening. If post count had never been conceived, people might not waste so much time on such a small objective.

What do you guys think; do you support post count, or are you against it? I have mixed feelings right now, despite what I may have said...if there truly was no post count, the forum industry might have never gotten started in the first place, so we all wouldn't be around to enjoy it. :/ But it also may have made forums more about community, which was their true intent from the beginning, rather than showing off and having a constant hunger for power.

I need enlightenment. (On a forum based subject? Who knew?)

Why not? It is quite possible they have been using Invisionfree since the start, and just have only posted three times. ;)

In regards to these forums in particular, I wouldn't mind if General Support was a no-post-count zone, or even the entire forums. :D

See that's what I figured...that people wouldn't take you seriously with a low post count.

People also think that high post count will increase their chances of becoming a member of the IF staff. I for one could care less about my post count. Someone who has 2,000 posts could be just as stupid as someone with 3.

In all actuallity I do care about post count. Not for the fame, glory, reknown, or anything else, but for the sheer fact that I have a weird habbit of wanting mathematical or 'common' numbers as my post count.
I for some reason like 25, 50, 75, 100, and things like 1111, 1234, 1331. I couldn't carless about if other people see it, I just like having the number for myself.

Post Count...the worst invention for any forum. :ermm: Quality over quantity anyday, I know some people use the number as a general indication but personally, it ONLY indicates the person has x amount of posts. It in no way indicates that they are a quality member, that they know what they're talking about, hell it doesn't even prove they've been around long (yay for the join date I guess ^_^), it simply indicates they have that amount of posts.

If I owned my own forum, I'd disable post count entirely and I'd look for a hack/code that hides it entirely. It's an ugly thing that does little good. I've yet to hear how on earth one can use post count to indicate that someone is, for example, good at support. To me, it simply says they may have posted in there a lot. And it could easily be drivle. Find All Posts/Topics however, is a handy little thing to check up on quality.

I like Phrank's idea of having a code that randomises post count. :r It's fun and it might stop certain individuals from being so stuck up themselves because, oh wow, they have a high post count and do support.

Must admit I wouldn't be saying this if I was at the top of the Top Ten Posters on here.

Post count is annoying. It leads to spam, stupidity, suffering, and hate. Down with post count! :arr:
No, really, its annoying and stupid. Most idiots think post count... grades your popularity and chances for being staff or something like that, but it doesn't. Any forum without post count would be nearly spam and idiot free, I assure you.

I'm sure it would be possible to hide post count (whether using Stefan's code  or something more internal) and still have pips go up when you have posted x amount of times, since all you have to do is hide the post count from people rather than disable it/rid of it/blow it up altogether. ^_^

Personalleh, I never pay attention to post counts. Except when a board has the post limit to reach custom member title-ship be 1500 or something. But that's besides the point.

I wouldn't want to get rid of it, just because..ehh. No big deal. But I can see why others would.

the reason i said my cooment earlier is because my past experiences have shown that there are a large amount of people in support who have joined for about 1 week, have 3 posts in gen support and are ust offering some of the worst support known to man! arg those people!

Yes, thank you Stefan.

Post count is for poopheads.
All it's good for is reminding you how much time you waste posting at forums. :r
