I was thinking of installing it as an alternative to XP <_< , but i would want to run it alongside of XP. As the web site says you have to download the right one for that. So i did but i have several problems.

1] EDIT I went back to the site, and clicked the one i want to download again, this time it is taking much longer and so i would guess this question is fixed.

2] When i tried to run the file windows came up and siad its little" Windows cant run this file with *example* *example* and so on programs, select a probgam to run it with. Where do i go from there?

And i know this is not an Ubuntu support forum, but i have a feeling there is enough positive support here to help he, if not who should i PM? :mellow:

No, i do know the answer to that question. You have to download the "Live CD" version from what i understand... :unsure:

You have to install Linux on partition space of your harddrive if you're gonna run Windows too, and windows has to be the one installed first.

I am personally goddamn sick of windows and it's crashing, so first thing tomorrow is buy a new harddrive, and install Ubuntu.

You must download the normal version, NOT the Live CD. You can then boot from the CD and run the install, and it will partition for you.

You don't need the DVD. Just an install CD.

I now have Ubuntu, but I don't understand most, can anyone help me on getting emulators for programs and stuff? I don't even know how to get Trillian or DC++ to work. Thanks

If you run Linux, use software for Linux ;)
Linux (or more specific: X) Trillian alternative: Gaim or Kopete. But Kopete's MSN plugin didn't work last time I checked.
There are also loads of IDEs for Linux, but I haven't tried one yet, I'm already a coding monkey at work, so I don't really feel like programming at home. But for the occasional PHP stuff, I use GEdit, the Gnome "notepad".

The Ubuntu user documentation might come in handy: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDocumentation

Edit:
Silly me >_<
DC++ isn't an IDE, DevC++ is :wacko:

Das Ein, I've only used Mandrake. By default is does all the partioning for you. I like to do it myself. It allows me to feel reassured.

If you are new to Linux I recommend you stick with using "rpm" files. These files automatically install and configure the programs.

If you really do need to run a windows program then you can sue a compatibility layer program called wine. Please note that it is not an emulator, it is a compatibility layer.
