So I got the SAMS Teach Yourself PHP book out from my library and I was wondering if someone could help me get started? I need to know what version I should be installing from their site http://www.php.net/downloads.php#v5.1 . If it makes any difference I'm using Windows XP. :$ |

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to install PHP on your local machine and enable your browser to process the PHP locally, as you would do with a HTML document. I'd recommend getting something like SmartFTP and a good host which you can keep re-uploading your file to - takes time, but I've not found an easier way yet. |

Boink, not true. Whilst it isn;t as easy as viewing HTML scripts locally, it is still very possible. Basically, you need to install a webserver like Apache (i use 1.3.33), and then install PHP. I personally use php4 not php5, but it depends. php5 offers better object-orientated programming, but is different enough from php4 to cause problems with some scripts. When you install both apache and php, you have to follow the instructions (within the php installation i believe) to get php running with apache. Then just place all your scripts in the htdocs folder, and goto http://localhost/scriptname.php |

Apache most definitely works on Windows XP; I've installed it once on Windows XP Home Edition before along with PHP and MySQL. Once you get passed the fact that you might get an "error" if you do anything to the config files, it's really quite easy. ![]() I'll agree that installing PHP 4.4.0 is preferable to PHP 5, simply because PHP 4 has a larger base still. While you're at it, you might want to look into installing MySQL simply because once you get more comfortable with PHP, you'll start learning how to use it with databases. |

Any reason why they wouldn't be? I never really thought about it too much, TBH, other that "it doesn't seem easy to do it. :/" |

30 minutes!!!! With IIS I can set up mySQL and PHP within 3 minutes! Just install IIS and set the app mapping, and then install mySQL. It's pretty simple:) OF course it's preffereable if you're gonna use it on a web server to do Apache, but locally IIS works fine (of course only on Windows, and not on Windows XP home though) |
