Fleas :(; any non-toxic ways to get rid of them?

Yeah.
I have fleas. :'(
Noticed some strange itchy bumps randomly all over me that didn't seem like poison oak or anything I've come across, and I haven't been hiking lately because it's been too hot, and I haven't been sexually active this month, so that sort of thing seemed unlikely as well. :ermm:
So, after finding a flea on my arm and another on the carpet, I figured the bumps are probably flea bites.
I don't have pets, so it's a bit odd and I wouldn't even have thought of fleas, but I do live at the edge of the woods, so they may have snuck in or hitchhiked on me after being outside, I guess, or maybe my sister's cats have them because I've been over there a few times recently.
I also thought it was odd to only find two, as it would seem to me there'd either be just one or a whole bunch, but I did a fairly thorough search and didn't find any others, but who knows?
Anyway, anybody know how I can make sure there aren't any more without bugbombing the whole house with nasty chemical sprays or whatever?
I've never had fleas, so I have no idea.
Searching around on Google right now, but I was hoping somebody with experience and/or reliable second-hand info might help cut the search time down. :/

vacums, fleas larva and eggs live in the carpet and are easly removed with a vacum, also take a hot (as hot as posible) bath.

I know.
There's only a few bumps, and they didn't itch much before I found the fleas, but now my whole body itches.

@drangonsile:

Thanks for that info. :)
I was thinking maybe I need to spray my bed and the couches and other stuff to make sure there's no hatched ones that can lay more eggs after I vacuum or something?

Um.. while I'm at it, does anybody know any good home remedies for itching? :eh:
Though I'm out of stuff for poision oak anyway, so maybe I should just go get some of that and see if it works.

Treat your home by vacuuming thoroughly and frequently. Use of diatomaceous earth (DE) is a very effective substance for killing fleas (as well as ants and several other pests) but has low toxicity for humans and pets. Spread a dusting onto carpets, upholstery and pet bedding. Wear goggles and a dust mask to avoid breathing the dust.

Use of a borax and water mixture in a carpet cleaner is another low-toxicity method to break the reproductive cycle of fleas. It does not kill adult fleas but the borate binds to carpet fibers and prevents fleas from maturing thus breaking the reproductive cycle. This treatment can be effective for up to a year. While borax powder can be sprinkled onto the carpet and the excess vacuumed up, the powder poses some hazard for your lungs and so the wet method is preferred.

If the source of fleas is from outside your home, such as wild animal nests in and around your home, use of diatomaceous earth (DE) is recommended. Do not use DE to treat the entire perimeter of your home as it will also kill beneficial insects. Spot treat nests as necessary.

You can send your bed sheets through the washer machine, and the mattress can be vaccumed, couch too (get under the cushions).

I’ve also heard stuff of viniger but not sure what they were saying.

Heh, I doubt it, but I could rig a few of them together.
I do have a carpet cleaner thing, so I could do the water/borax routine and just wash all my bedding.
Thanks. :)

Flea kicks ass.

Take a "Hot Vinegar Bath" and scrub all over with a "Brillo" pad.
Will cure the junkman's itch also.

Sounds painful. :/

I'm not sure I want to know what "the junkman's itch" is. :ermm:

My friend's mum swears by using Daktarin on fleas...sort of coating yourself in it or something.
Not really sure how that works, fleas aren't exactly fungi, but then again, they have 8 cats and don't have flea problems, so it might work..

The reason is probably because Daktarin is somewhat oily, fleas/mites all hate oily substances.. so if you cover yourself in it then they won't attach to you.

If you're cleaning a flea infested area I recommend putting an oily substance (doesn't have to be Daktarin) around only your wrists...that way they can't climb up your arm and hide while you're vacuuming ;)
