I am in need of help. For almost one year i have been trying to create games using Mysql and php.. games like Koc and Dawn of warriors.. they are text based games. using only text.. you can attack spend gold on weapons etc etc. I learned that i needed Php and mysql to make these games.. So i tried to learn Php and mysql. The php part went fine but the mysql i have been having problems with. I just dont understand any of it. I have read many tutorials but none of them have ever worked when testing them. I have a host that can host mysql php etc. so i can get my files on the server but i dont really understand how to connect to a mysql server or whatever. I think that is what i am doing wrong. Can someone help me with that.. or is there anyone who has created or is creating a text bassed game that can help me? |

I don't know what sort of text-based games you want to make, but Alan is a good, free language for making adventure games. Even non-programmers can understand it, and it's relatively simple. If you're still looking into using MySQL (and who isn't? ) then I recommend Practical PHP Programming's section on databases. Great book, that chapter no exception. To start off . . . the simplest command to connect to a MySQL database:

The main things you'd need for a large chunk of the game, IMO, are SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and possibly UNION queries in SQL - www.w3schools.com is good for those
