I agree, having an awesome skin will definately help in drawing more people, it will be a plus but that does not mean, the default skin will stop any guests from joining. As long as you have the contents and interesting topics to post on, people will come and join. No doubt about it. To tell you the truth, when I still had an old site with IPB, I managed to recruite about 100 members without any new skins. I am not joking. So, it is possible without the fancy skins even though it will be easier to draw attention to more people if you have a skin that is attractive.

Yes it will get you more members, but I don't want people joining just because they think it "looks" good. Those people NEVER stay, I'd rather have someone join, because they like the board itself. Besides it may be plain, but it isn't bad looking. Look at this board, it's default, but people join.

Yes, that is what I was saying. Just because you have a kick *** skin, doesn't mean it will score hundreds of new members. What I am saying is that, skin does not really matter. Of course, it will appeal to more people at first, but on a long run, it's the content that matters more. If your site looks awesome with possibly the best looking skin there is, it will draw people in at first, but if your content sucks, it will eventually die down and turn the members down and drive them away never to come back eventually. That was what I trying to point out. I already experienced it when I had my old site with IPB before it got attacked from the crackers. I was only using the default skin, and was keep adding contents and activities the members can enjoy, adding banner, changing its post buttons, adding arcade, Chatroom and all kinds of stuff, and by the time I have added few new skins, I had already managed to recruite close to about 100 members, and about 25% of them remained loyal and kept visiting until the end. So, that is exactly what I was saying, that, having a better skin helps to draw in new members at first, but even if you stick with the original default skin, as long as your content is good, you would have no problem in gaining new members.

Well, I hope all of your site luck and wish them to prosper. If anyone is interested in checking out my site, it is listed on my sig. It's nowhere near as good as most of your site, and nowhere near as populated since it is only about a month old and it's a site that is a continuation of my dead site which I had to start over from the rubbles of the hacked old site, but I hope you guys/gals like it.

I know everybody has been saying, "Don't have too many forums or it'll seem less active", but isn't it possible to turn off people by not having enough forums? Like if you only have 5 people might not assume it's a very big board and leave... Just a though...

The way I do it on my site is, hide the arcade and some better categories from the guests. That way, once they join, they find out that they have more things to enjoy than they though they would. That's how I do it.

You will find something called promote member(I think its found under users category, I don't remember and I am too lazy to log in to the admin CP now), what you do is, create a new group. Call it elite member or whatever you want, and promote the member to reach that title when a set post count is reached. The mods can still see it however, but regular member won't.

I have one suggestion to all those who are looking for more participation from your members.

>USE THE "PERMISSION MASK" Feature To Restrict PPL From Entering A Special Forum Who Have Less Than Say 20 Posts. I've done the same and I see people actually posting.

My Board Has 4000+ Members & About 15000 Posts. So Guys This Really Works :)

SO YOU HAVE A BOARD, WITH SOME MEMBERS, BUT THEY JUST DON'T REPLY....

WHAT TO DO?

TRY SOME OF THE TIPS THAT MADE MY BOARD A SUCCESS:

>USE THE "PERMISSION MASK" Feature To Restrict PPL From Entering A Special Forum Who Have Less Than Say 20 Posts. I've done the same and I see people actually posting.

>Name the new forum like.....Exclusive or Gold Section...idea is to create a buzz

>Have A SHOUT BOX

>Enable "Quick Reply" in all your forums.

>Use A SIMPLE SKIN <---This Is Very IMP.

>Have Some Contests Like "TOP POSTER OF THE DAY" and give some free posts to the member who posts the maximum replies for that day.

>DO NOT HAVE UNNECESSORY MODS or JS ON YOUR FORUM

>Have Limited Number Of Mderators (I've seen boards with about 300 members and 15 mods....LOL).

My Board Is Just 1 Month OLD & Has 4000+ Members & About 15000 Posts. So Guys This Really Works :)

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO SPREAD THE NAME OF YOUR BOARD. LET ME KNOW AND I'LL SURELY TRY AND HELP YOU WITH THAT. :)

Personally, I don't think it's fair to judge posting privileges with a specific number.

The "post count" should not mean anything. It only provokes spam/
