I have 83 members and I have about 15 who are posting often. I really don't worry too much about people who don't post.I can't put pressure on them and there is a lot of activity going on everyday, so the topics are always used
I don't post here much, because I always find the answer to my questions. So why posting double topics?

My members are rarely active on my forum even though I post new topics everyday. They join and then I never see them again. I've got a contest up now and none of them have joined that.

Has anyone heard of the post exchange method? Its where you ask another admin who's in a similar situation as you to post on your forum while in exchange, you post of their forum. You could agree on 20 posts each or however much you want. I haven't tried it but it sounds like a good way to increase activity.

Sounds like a rather desperate measure. I mean, surely if you're having to agree to post on one anothers boards instead of joining out of free will and posting because you enjoy the forum then that says something about the forum...or perhaps more the user? :/
Personally, if a person is only posting because you agreed to post x amount in order to raise the number of topics or stats then they're not worth the time it takes to make a topic. I'd recommend never having to resort to such things - if your board is worthy of someone posting then let it be out of free will. There's nothing more satisfying than knowing users who post are doing so because they want to. ^_^ I can understand that if things reach a low then you'd want a way to increase activity but buying it isn't the way, not if you want the board to be good. If you're just out for having lots of statistics then I can see why it's tempting but if you're just out to own your own forum and want happy members, avoid it at all costs! And any other silly exchange programme, like this whole referal thing where you affiliate with someone if they have x members join. Eech!

Don't worry if your board is slow, focus not on the posts but on trying to discover why its quiet. Ask members, send out emails and see if you get feedback. If you need to advertise, find ways of doing so. If you need to add someone in to entice people try and find out what it could be (personally, I recommend taking suggestions but also doing something you want to do that is suitable for the board). Every board goes through a quiet stage, sometimes they happen periodically (my old one was quiet every winter - just me and the boiler talking ), it's nothing to worry about so much that you need to resort to things like that. In fact, there are very few forums that are massively active from the get go that make a success and don't suffer from quiet periods. Some boards, such as Support, which are essentials are almost never quiet (unless maintenence is on or something) but just about every other board has its time. Just go with it, stick by it through the tough times and focus on improvement rather than buying activity. Or, better yet, use the quiet time to deal with real life stuff. :D Believe me, juggling an uber active board and work or college or whatever isn't easy so be thankful if you have offline commitments for the peaceful times you have.

Just my opinion though, tis how I work things. I believe an admin simply needs to prioritise his/her time and know what to do and when to do it. It gets easier as you go on; the more experience you have the better your board can be - if you learn from your experiences.

This one guy joined (Named Daniel6), he had 0 posts a few days later, even though i'd seen him log on anyway.

I thought it was a tad odd. I realized that he would post in people's Introductions (The Intro forum doesn't provide a post count increase), and no where else. I was confused. It made no sence. Joining a forum just to welcome others?

It was then that a guy PMed me saying that someone had been PM advertising, it was the guy I thought it was, it was Daniel6.

I clicked on the forum link (To his forum), and sure enough, a few of my best members had joined his site, and were Moderators. I decided to have a little talk with Daniel6. He said he wouldn't use the Personal Messenger System for Advertising purposes. I never saw him again.

Just thought I would share that with you all.

That is very annoying. I've had that happen 2 times before, but caught the person quickly before anything really happened. Then put them in "probation" group, no PMing. They never came back.

The best way to get members tobe active is have mini-contests. That's what I do.

See, no, thats not the best way to get people to be active. If every forum dealt with things like cars or sports, sure, you could. Some are meant to be a bit more serious on matters though, and contant contests merely take away from quality posting.
