Yeah, I did that when I had the time.... Posting as multiple users to make it look more busy. Didn't help much I don't think, but I was starting off with no posts and no active users, so that's better than no posts at all on the board. |

2 months old 49 Members 8607 posts It's a bit of a cheat because we brought about 10 members from a site where the admin decided they couldn't be bothered to run it any more and closed it without warning. We started the forums using PHPBB which was Offline more than it was on. Before we closed these forums we had about 30 odd members of which about 25 came accross to our InvisionFREE forums. The only suggestions I can give are... Have a purpose for the forums, ours is the town I live in, so it gives a topic of conversation if nobody can think what to say. Give an area where members can talk about anything. Not every post can be "On Topic" Let Guests see (but not post) some of the forum including a couple of the more active ones. we even have a section that Guests can post in (if they post an hello and get several "Hello, why don't you join us" posts back they may decide to join. Promotions - We dont allow new members to see all the forums. We let members know that after they reach a certain number of posts we will post a poll for the staff. As long as all there posts havent been of the "LOL", "ROFLMAO" and "Yeah" type we promote them and open up the rest of the forums. When the regulars from the first forums came over to our forums we created sections for them. One was always posting about the local football team so we created a "Local Sports" section and made him the Moderator. Join other similar forums. I have not had any complaints about placing a standard size text link to our forums in my signature. The only complaints I have seen is when the advert has been other the top or thats all they talk about. I've also registered a domain name (about £6 for 2 years .co.uk) which is much easier to remember when you tell friends, colleagues etc. If I think of anything else I will post them here |

That's the smartest point there! I learned the hard way. If guests are viewing your forum and can't see it, there's absolutely NO reason to join, because they can't see the forums and don't know what you're talking about. If you were viewing a random forum would you join it because it says "register to see the board"? If you want your guests to be interested and want to join the conversation, they HAVE to see what you're talking about. |

I started a board in June..I have 20 members and over 11,000 posts. We have had about 10 other people join, but they never post...even when there was a "welcome" to them at the top of the page. I have a clause in my rules of the board that says "If you don't post in 30 days you will be deleted" It just gripes me that you spend all that time making your board look nice and they don't post...of the 20 I have ...about 15 post every day. They are very loyal. |

Yea I get that too, i have about 57 members and a almost 2,000 posts, it just makes me upset at how hard I work to add new features to the board and I even upgraded to IPB (board will be available soon) and that costs a lot of money to do that from my point of view, I even submitted my site to google, and I got a lot of affiliates, but for some reason i dont seem to get a lot of traffic -_- |

Its best to have meta-tags when submitting to search engines, and thier are a pile of search engines out thier other then google to submit to. (personally I don't like the page rank thing..esp if its zero)

Just advertise your forum in your signature, and submit your site to search engines, try and advertise your board in every forum you join, thats what I do.. and I do get a couple of members eventually you'll get loads if you continue to put your board in your signature you'll eventually (hopefully) get loads of members just don't give up.. continue to advertise where your allowed. Hope that helped

I hate when that happens. They could atleast post a welcome thread. You just need to get members who aren't members at big forums. |

I know some forums run a daily trivia which keeps track of the members scores and I'm thier everyday to play that and look around. |
