RE: started up yesterday and tonnes of posts and 30 odd members : Yes, but to have that many members in ONE day, unless they are all friends and/or relatives you must have spammed.. because no-one would find you THAT quick :P

and.. as for the dig about Ravenwolf Manor having "WAY TOO MANY FORUMS"...

As a brand new member, I agree that it is all a bit confusing, but you can't see these 100 or more forums when you first start, I am a little bit lost, but it will just take time to sit down and work out what everything is about, (the same as if I had entered a large castle, I wouldn't immediately know where I could eat, toilet and sleep would I?) I'm sure if I ask questions about where I can post, they will be answered.

It really is an each to their own. If someone wants ONE forum, then that is ok, but if someone has painstakingly created 100 or more forums (to signify the rooms in a vast ancient castle) then that is also ok.

Members should not judge each other's forums.

IF they all looked the same.. why would members join more than one of them?

Credit is due to Ravenwolf for so much hard work that must have gone into his designs... not a bashing that he has way too many forums. (have any of you actually joined and TRIED to join in?)

Besides, this wasn't a BASH EACH OTHER'S FORUM post anyway, we were discussing about members joining and not posting.

I've said my piece.

C.

Beowulf1976: Hm. Spammed? I acutally didnt. I just spent alot of time getting everything done before opening. Like, the whole appearance. And i had my members help recruit and also advertised on many boards. (Which allowed advertising, eg. SZ).

I also have a staff from this forum, which helps alot. And a few elites from the largest IF board, SZ to help ad.

Nothing is impossible.

yes it is true that new members like posting in already started topics rather then make new ones so posting in your own forums is very important to get people to join AND post. well as I said respect one another is very important because if you don't do this then before you know no one is treating anyone with respect and that isn't what anyone wants. another thing is that admin and mods are members too and I really don't think they should get any special privileges or be allowed to bypass rules. admins and mods are almost always close friends in the online or offline world so it doesn't look good to give your buddies one set of rules and everyone else a different set. the appearance counts tremendously but many only look at the look of the board and not how the admins and mods appear to act. if it even appears that your admins and mods are nazi like and ban/suspend people for stupid and idiotic stuff then people aren't going to join or even those who do won't post because they are afraid of losing their membership.

it may be shocking but not everyone who joins a forum is going to be knowledgeable and some may have joined a forum for the first time. some may accidently break a rule and not know it. don't go and ban/suspend/insult people for first offenses. that makes you look bad and they may just have been confused. if there is a question or problem then quick responses are very much appreciated and they will notice that. if a member hasn't shown up for a while then send them a pm or e-mail and I have done this several times and they do appreciate the fact that you notice their absence.

remember no matter how many members you have you should treat each one like there are your only one and not take them for granted. you obviously gave them a reason to join so don't go give them a reason to leave your board permantely.

personally I find that keeping out of other people's personal messages is a good idea. even though your are the admin there shouldn't be any rules for what you can send in a PM besides anything insulting or demeaning. what does it do to you or your forum if they advertised a forum through PM. if you don't want to read it then delete it and be done with it.

I personally don't restrict my members from doing anything unless it hurts one of my members or the admin(me) or it breaks one of IF's rules.

and camero why in the world do you have a group title called "grammer police." I mean I don't think you need someone pointing out grammer and spelling mistakes. if you can get what they are talking about then you don't need perfect grammer and guess what there isn't anyone in here who pratices perfect grammer and insulting members over something as trival as that is not worth it. you start fights and problems and before you know it you can have a serious problem on your hands over something as trivial as that. no offense to anyone by the way as I am just stating my opinion.

as for my forum I have 22 members and only two haven't posted yet and I spoke with one of them who is just too busy to come over and start posting and the other is someone that I know from other boards and that member hasn't shown up there either.

It is kinda rare, unless you have money to get yourself ranked high on search engines. Most people only click on affiliation buttons/go to the directory to advertise THEIR board. Idk, I'm starting to get some active members, but after two years I should have had ALOT more.... I guess it's neglect of the forum, but still I thought I would be alot bigger now.. I mean two years.... and since someone deleted all of the threads it's alot smaller. [/end rant]

I highly doubt that it has anything to do with the skin/appearance.

I made my forum "live" on 1st November, here's our stats (newest member edited out)

"Our members have made a total of 2,119 posts
We have 27 registered members
The newest member is ***********
Most users ever online was 8 on Nov 15 2005, 06:37 PM"

We haven't changed the skin, we've only added a "banner"... so it's nothing to do with the skin, that is personal preference anyway.

Some people like to see a lot of graphics, some people like it to be plain and simple.

IMHO Someone is NOT going to join a forum just because it "looks cool", it is mainly dependant on the subject of the forum, if people aren't interested in the subject matter, they aren't going to join, JUST BECAUSE it looks cool ... are they?

Each to their own I guess

Hmm... I've seen alot of people who don't post on different boards that I run...

However, there are some boards that I don't post in too often... Not because I don't want to... But because I forget my password every day, even after changing it... :r

There isn't a board I have joined and not posted in though...

Why do that? What if they do want to come and start posting? You've deleted their account. They wont like that
