To the best of my knowladge no, but there might be some weird server program that lets you. Though if that did exsist it would significantly slow down your website.

I have just been researching allot lately about stuff like this and I am trying to find the cheapest solution. I dont realy want to spend the money on a server they can cost a couple thousand dollors for a good one.

Yeah you can use apache or something. You need a good upstream and a fixed IP though really.

It's certainly possible. As slaytanist said, Apache is a good server to use if you're going for that. It can run PHP and MySQL. If you're looking for help setting it up, Apache Freaks might be a good place to check out.

Hosting a site on your computer can be problematic, though. If you have a "dynamic" IP (one that changes each time you connect to the Internet) then it will change, and so will he address of your site. Also, many ISPs take specific steps to block clients from using their computers as web servers in this way (I know that mine does).

It can also be difficult because every time your computer is turned off, your website is inaccessable. I had a friend who ran his website of of his computer, but he had all sorts of computer problems, and the website was down all the time.

Definitely, but you need a computer that is always on with an always-on connection to the internet (DSL or cable, or something like that). Then, you need to make sure that if you have a router, that it is forwarding port 80 to your computer, and if you have a modem that is directly connected to you computer, that it is not acting like a "mini-router" in that it assigns your computer a local IP address instead of an IP address that is valid anywhere on the web.

After that, you need some program that will server files like Apache. If you want things like php/MySQL support, you'll have to install those too. Once you've got everything configured, you'll need to enable port 80 access on your firewall (if you have one).

Now I think I am missreading this, are you asking if you can turn your computer into a server, or have it be a server AND use it for other things at the same time?

You can use a server for other purposes as long as you don't shut it down (or crash it)

You just would probably slow down the web pages you are serving.

This seems like a little too much work. Is their any very cheap servers that work good for websites?

www.theplanet.com must be the best site for dedicated servers. Not putting to much of a whole in your pocket at the same time.

A virtual server is much more cheap (hosting).

Dedicated costs around 200 bucks a month for a cheap one, and then hosting costs around 2 bucks a month for a cheap (even free in some cases).

If you're willing to keep your computer on all the time, then it's pretty easy to set up a server (with iis). With apache it's alot harder!, but way more efficient.

Heh... I get free hosting to a almost dedicated server (2 sites) for free :) Almost unlimited bandwidth too :D

Gotta love your parents

Get cable / DSL stuff.

But trust me, just getting hosting is way more usefull.
Because to be able to let your pc act as a decent server, you'll be needing lots of connection speed / bandwidth.

Well thanks everyone for the help.

I think I might try using my computer but first I am going to research some prices on hosting.
