OK, I'm having to use Windows ME. My Windows XP got so borked up that I was forced to whatever else I had ... like Windows ME for once. And the darn thing is unstable -- even that KB-something-or-other patch was making the crashes worse ...

Just help the d00d, please? I need to keep this thing purring as long as I can...

Sort of vague, man. :/

Are you getting any specific error messages, or is it crashing randomly or consistently at a certain point or anything?
Did you do a complete reformat before installing it?

Personally, I'd recommend tracking down a dedicated ME support site to seek help, since it could be fairly complicated or hard to find the actual problem(s).

ME creates its own problems - you don't need to do anything and you'll have to resintall it.

You could switch to Linux until you can get everything sorted...

From what I've heard, I would tend to agree, though some people have claimed it works perfectly fine, but only a completely fresh install.

Oh gosh yeah, ME is terrible, had problems when I was using that, installing without formatting the drives before is not really an option.

I ran ME on one computer for a long time and had no problems at all with it, not even a resource problem (always over 80%) ...its a tweaked 98

Hmm, yeah, I've heard nasty things about ME. (Memory leaks, mysterious bugs, etc) I've never actually seen any of them though. I rarely am near a ME computer though. If you're set on sticking with ME, I'd try a complete system reinstall if you continue to encounter random crashes. Reinstalls are a pain though.

I don't know what you mean by "borked up" but when Windows XP died, I would have backed up my files (in windows if possible, otherwise by using some other method), and simply reinstalled. Windows XP seems to be pretty stable as long as you treat it nice >_< . Anyways, whatever you do, make sure you download all of the security patches from windowsupdate.microsoft.com. If you don't, your computer will probably be infected with some virus/spyware program in no time.

Edit: I mean download the patches after you reinstall assuming you do reinstall XP or ME.

A blast from the past.

I would save the truble and just install a Linux distro. for all who claim ME is a good OS then why was WIndows 95/98 supported by MS longer then ME? ;)

You can still find support for ME at microsoft..may not be able to call them..but who would anyways :o

No I got the the point as mine was expressed above too, I had abosolultly zero problems with ME...and was more reliable then 95 or 98/98SE for me, as far as that goes the company's should support all thier software.

From my experience, Win98 was more reliable and better than XP as well.
I've probably reinstalled XP 15 times, at least.
I think I reinstalled 98 maybe 3 times, and at least one of those was just to repartition, and it wasn't a big bloated resource hog designed to make you have to upgrade your hardware. :r
OS's seem to work wildly different for different people, depending on what they're doing with them, so I don't really think you can make blanket statements about them.
Anyway, I think we should probably leave the OS war out of this topic, so let's try to keep further discussion to the problem at hand.

Ive used Windows 98SE  ME and XP  98 for gaming no problems until water got in the computer. ME Ugh problems every where and just for using the web and word processing. XP problems few and far in between gaming, web, and word processing.
any who I would sugest at this time untill we find out more...to "downgrade" to 98SE if you need to use windows.
