IPB is for a webmaster, while IF is recommended for a beginner webmaster (someone who hasn't hosted a message board, or a website before)

My brothers opinion - IPB is better. As it provides more options in the ACP. Also has alot more features which can get more out of your board. The only downside is when beginners use it. They don't know how to create a mySQL database etc...

what kind of topic is this? of course IPB is MUCH better, since when is the free stuff better than the paid stuff? IF only looks better in the newbies' eyes who have no idea how to set up and run it, I argee that IPB requires more work and knowledge (and money), but it's rewarding because you can do A LOT more with it (if you know how that is)

Essentially, InvisionFree is a free hosted version of IPB 1.3, although there are lots of underlying changes. There are some features that are missing from IPB, and some features that do not exist in IPB 1.3.

With IPB, you have to have hosting and upload all the files yourself and install the board yourself. All maintenence must be done by you. With InvisionFree, we do all that for you so you can focus on making a great forum :)

But IPB, Phpbb etc. have alot more customization options then IF. If has very few sites you can go to and pick a skin- where as IPB and PHpbb you can make your own.

That will all change soon though. I’m sure IFv2 will be right up there in features with IPS but a little more unique. To be honest it’s kind of smart to go with a service like IF. You don’t have to worry about back-ups, dealing with the Database etc. I think a lot of folks are more at ease knowing that they won’t have to deal with it.

You make it sound as if IF has no ability to customize your forum. Sure, IPB allows you to modify your HTML templates, but you can still modify your headers/footers and CSS with IF.

The header and footer sections are sorely underused in my opinion, and much more can be done with them than current skins make use of.

I have an IPB site hosted by Invision, and an IF site.

Invision do the upgrades on the IPB site for you, if you want them to - they do mine, as I have no idea about SQL.

So IPB and IF are both installed and upgraded/patched etc for me.

Both have heaps of good points, and just one or two 'bad' ones. I think what I miss most with the IF board is not being able to load a choice of skins - not a problem though, at least I can load smileys :) - and with the IPB board, I have trouble with the WYSIWYG editor sometimes, so I switched it off.

But both sites are great, and so much better than PHPBB from an Admin CP point of view. :)

No forum service is worth paying for. Make it free, and it's heaven on Earth. Charge a cent, and the developers are scumbags. :)

Well for the less advanced users that don't know much about Mysql and ftp should use IF, but advanced users should use full IPB as you get more control over your board and you can install mods

No forum service is worth paying for. Make it free, and it's heaven on Earth. Charge a cent, and the developers are scumbags. :)

That's rediculous. XP Having full access to a forum's database for a rather large community, perhaps having some decent bandwith & filesize limits for uploading, etc.'s not worth just a little cash?

Anywho, InvisionFree is great. It really is. I still use it for a number of things: test boards, skin tests, discussion boards for certain things, etc. And I recommend people to IF. Simple to setup, great to run.

However, I do prefer a 'fully-featured' IPB, merely because I've got access to the core bulk of the files that make it up. Don't get me wrong, a great many things have been done with scripts and 'codes' for IF Boards - shoutboxes, RPG Systems, and the like included. But, for that extra, extra personal touch, I prefer to be able to modify things from it's source. For instance: on my pending message boards for my pending website (..that is.. pending), I've modified the My Controls layout & functionality a looot. And hey, I like goofing with things like that. =P

The truth is: you can get decent hosting plans which can very well accomodate a message boards for around $6.99 - $20.00, so I've seen. Myself, I've lucked out with a plan set up by a friend of mine at one webhost, so I'm very content ($6 for the features I'll be getting is... a steal of OG LOC AND MADD DOGG PORPORTIONS!!!1).

But, there are drawbacks. If there's an issue here or an error there, hey, it can take some serious WORK. I mean a lot. And I have to back-up databases, and all that fun stuff - things like that aren't impossibly difficult, but a tad annoying at times. Where as, if you're going through InvisionFree, you don't have to worry about it at all. It's handled for you. The very worst situation you could land yourself in, is taking part of your CSS out or entering a faulty 'code' by accident, in which case, things can be rather easily fixed. And, IF's Admin CP is very sleek, clean, and smooth. Domain Manager, 100% guranteed uptimes (save the occasional server issue, which is rare), and the support makes IF quite nice.

Also, don't assume "onleh noobz use IF advanced PROS use IPB". I've seen people whom can work wonders and than some take IF boards and turn them into masterpieces of art - namely a Fire Emblem boards hosted by here, which my jaw about dropped when I saw it. It looked... friggin' amazing, best looking IF Boards I've seen in my life.

All in all, here's my advice: don't go around saying "IF PWNS IPB AND UTHER FORUMZ IT FREE!!!". Don't go "paid services > IF cuz t3h noob use IF". Go with what you feel is right, and pursue it. Posted Image
