What are your reccomendations? THings that make them stay alive? When you go to forums, besides post/member count, what are the top five things that attract you? Repell you?

How profesional it looks. Domains help too.
In an advertisment place, the first boards I look at are ones with domains.

friendliness of members and staff, layout of the board, activity level (i.e., recent posts in most forums from the last 2 or 3 days) and honestly, the member list goes into consideration...not necessarily the bigger, the better, either...

This isn't a very relavent factor when it comes to repelling members dude. Although it does make your site look professional if you do have one. Especially a script-like one such as www.domain.com/forums. Even http://forums.domain.com work. But if it's just a domain in a site-like format, when infact, an invisionfree forum is not a site, it's very unprofessional. :/

Hell, talking about this makes me want to get a new invisionfree forum again because my IPB 1.3.1 one is jacked up. :ermm:

The oly reason I am not going to get a domain is because i don't want to pay for it montly <_<

Usually Grammer, skin, coding, forum/category layout is what attracts me.

Just grammar? What about spelling? :r

4. Not too many mods/codes

 You do know that some of the absolute greatest and highest ranking forums in the world have no or extremely few codes, right? Not having enough codes or modifications seems like a pretty odd reason to be repelled froma forum.
Simplicity is the key. Too many forums are so customised that you can scarcely move around without something totally unnecessary being in your way.

Anyhoo, personally I focus on the atmosphere, the types of topics available and how staff interact with members. Anything else being good is a plus. Skin, banner, graphics; it counts for little in the end, unless of course the skin is horribly bright or dark and the colours blend like water against a blue background. :ermm: Depending on the subject of the forum, professionalism can be another factor but if it's a fun forum designed for little else but conversing in weird ways and getting to know people then it doesn't matter much, though certain things like power abuse and egos are worth watching for.

Ouch... Irony much? :ermm: You spelled grammar wrong. Infact, most people do, and yet, the people say that they like forums with good grammar (e.g. descriptions, staff's posts, etc.), they hardly contribute to the good grammar part themselves. But, then again, this is just one spelling error. I am sort of a spelling/grammar/punctuation nazi and like to correct people alot on this (even if it's just the slightest error). Sorry if that small rant seemed a bit useless... :$

Dam*, you got to it while I was posting. >_< And even made a better point that's short, simple and sweet. :$ Oh well, I just like to post big things alot, when I should worry more about the posting quality, not quantity. </slightly off-topic> :$

LOL, be sure to put a signature limit too. I've seen a lot of sites with members who had abhorrently large sigs. . .
