People spam hits. It's aggrivating going to the "top" boards on the directory, only too see that it's some 500-post forum with 20 illiterate members and no organization. The only thing that makes these boards different from many others like them is the administrator has found some way around your system to prevent Hit flooders. Meanwhile, the good boards remain covered in piles of muck, and well-intentioned admins have no way to advirtise --- well, unless someone actually goes to page 50 in the directory. Furthermore, it's almost impossible to rise up without already being on top. People click the "top" boards first, and usually don't look at much beyond the first page or two. And if you're telling someone about your board, you give them the url (and that won't increase the hits). You don't say, "go to http://www.invisionfree.com/directory.php?cat=26" and click your way through the pages until you reach my board." - - - - - So how can we truly give the top boards top positions in an automated manner? Well, we look at what makes board great. Most things that do, we can't measure in numbers. But one thing that stands out: dedicated members who come back to read and post more and more. Unfortunately, there is no such variable "dedicated_members." But there are two variables that can find how much people, in general, like the board: Posts Per Member If it was done entirely on posts, there would be people who have no shame in making private foums and posting a gazillion times just to get to the top of the directory. If it was done entirely on members, there would be people who have no shame in registering a lot a members. Using posts/member makes the method of spamming a lot of posts much less effective. Sure, angry competing board admins might register a whole bunch of accounts on other boards to decrease their PPM. But this is easily controllable by the victim administrators. They simply delete the inactive members (most admins don't do this enough; I delete members when they've been inactive for 60 days.) This would also promote keeping your board clean and tidy. Using Posts/Member on the Board Directory instead of hits would remove "hit flooding," put the best boards at the top, promote better boards rather than better methods of cheating, and get the good boards recognized. We already have a new directory in development. It will rank boards by numerous factors and can automatically detect abuse. |

It is not directly related. The directory may come out either before or after IF 2. As all my resources are going towards IF 2 at this time I would expect that it will come out after IF 2. |

I would also add a suggestion: The date of last post on the board should also effect rating. I found several boards high up in the ranks, and last posts are e.g Sept last year (unless they have a large member only section, but this would be strange as most viewable topics are related to the board topic). How can a closed board be so high up in the ranks? |

I actually think the directory should display the amount of posts for each boards, amount of members and last post date, so its easier to know if a board is active or not |

I think it should be setup much like allot of topsites do by giving you a special link and each time someone clicks that link it raises your ranking. These topsites lists also have it so it sorts out abusers. |

I agree about forums that have been closed for longer than just a week or whatever it might take for maintenance being taken off until they re-open, but not just for inactivity. Inactive (or relatively inactive) forums will have their ranking effected under the new system, though it's only one of many factors taken into consideration, so a good but fairly inactive forum could still rank higher than a very active forum that's not so good in other ways.

that's good idea when forum loses people so the system can check if any visitors if none - system will remove forum from directory view like me i do take board offline by manually if no one joins my board so that way the directory is kept updated
