Make sure your forum is original.

As long as your members have things to do and post about, and items at your forum can only be found at your forum, there is a much greater chance that your forum will become increasingly active. If your members have things to do, there’s a greater chance of them returning and maybe bringing a few of their friends along with them.

You also have to be prepared to spend a lot of time at your forum. You can't show up at your forum everyday for only 30 min expecting it to become active. You should spend a lot of time with your members and create a nice community feel to it.

As well with all that, you should post at other forums and place links to your site wherever the rules permit it. As long as people constantly hear about your forum they will start to become more aware of it and maybe one day decide to click that link in your sig and check out your site.

Good luck with your forum!

Advertise in your sig on sites with lots of visitors, submit to search engines, tell your friends, make current members feel welcome so that they'll want to tell their friends.

I agree. To spread the word of your board advertising is the best step to take since you want to actually spread the word and tell people about it. This is a little article I created for one of my boards on how to gain members for your board by advertising. Hopefully it will give you some general advertising ideas.

Advertising is a beneficial way to retrieve members. There is many ways to advertise and spread the word of your board. After organizing your board, and laying down the board data in a complex way or maybe even a simple way can keep your board organized and the way you want it to be. Here is some various ways to advertising your board.

  • Search Engines: Most user's place their boards on Search Engines or Search Directories to advertise their board, and spread the word about it. Placing boards on Search Engines is one of the largest seen and most simplistic ways to advertise your board. There is many Search Engines that will allow websites, boards, and other online-related sites to be placed on their Search Engines. Sometimes it is free, and sometimes it may cost, if you are in desperate need of members the cost may not mean a thing in this case. Here is some common Search Engine or Directory projects.

    Submit your site to Yahoo!
Submit your site to the Open Directory Project
    Submit your site to Google
    WebLaunch Search Engine Optimization

You can also find more websites that will allow you to add your board to their Search Engine or Directory by searching through Google add site to search results.

  • Meta Tags: Meta Tags are a complex way to add your board to Search Engines or Directories that will also spread bots, crawlers, and other types of metadata to your board. Meta Tags can be customized, and can have different types metadata depending on the way you customize them. Meta Tags is a common way to advertise your board, but according to Google Secrets Meta Tags are dead, which may be true in some cases, but is most cases Meta Tags will still be implanted on your board, and will spread the word even more with the metadata that is configured along with your board. Here is some useful links on using Meta Tags.

    Meta Tag Analyzer
    Meta Tag Tools
How to use HTML Meta Tags

Learn more about Meta Tags by searching through the Google Search Engine by using the keyword Meta Tag.

  • Paid Advertising: Paid Advertising as in solutions to advertise by paying for it is a good way to advertise if you do not mind paying for it, most paid advertising solutions will give more advertising information out or have more solutions rather than advertising for free. Both solutions are good though. The category I see most likely to be under “Paid Advertising” is ad’s and other type of promotions that can spread the work either than Search Engines and Search Directories. When your board is first created I would try to stick with free advertising solutions then move on to paid advertising solutions after your board has become active enough to assure yourself that your money will not be wasted. Here is some useful links on with solutions on Paid Advertising.

    Google Advertising Solutions
    Paid Advertising Information
    Automated Classified Ads

Learn more about Paid Advertising by searching through the Google Search Engine by using the keyword Paid Advertising.

  • Advertising Submissions: Submitting your site to boards, and other websites for them to review should advertise your board in a way, and even give you information out on changing your board up so it will look even better and this may be a key to gain more members. You can find many boards that review your board under the category reviews in the Board Directory. Once you have received a review from the proper people your board traffic may increase depending on the things you have changes, and the people on the board that viewed your board.
