Seriously, get the Creative Zen. I have it, and I've never looked at anything else since. It's quick (meaning it doesn't lag behind like most iPods), it has a lovely high resolution screen, it plays with my PC with joy as I've not had one problem since I've had it (over 2months) and it's a pleasure to use

All options that he wouldn't be using while driving, which by reading his post I assume is the primary use for it.

However, I've seen a holder that can be used with the Creative Zen thus it'd be ideal as it won't be lying around on the dash or passenger seat, also allowing a sturdy base for it so he can easily press next/stop/pause/etc and navigate through the menus with the crystal clear screen. So, I'd say a few of those options are useful.
And the stand only costs (here in the U.K) £20 :P

However, yea there are cheaper options but surely you need the MP3 player for more than just the 20minute drive. I use mine where ever I go out :P

Depends on the size of the file, and (i think) type.

how big are mp3 files are they mesured in kb or mb? O_o

Mostly MB

For reference:

2GB of memory plays back over 32 hours of MP3 (64 hours of WMA) music (over 480 MP3/960 WMA songs)

Of course, it depends highly on the quality.

How many songs would a 2gb mp3 player hold?

Most songs are around 5megs so a gig is 1000 megs... doing math.... Around 400 songs.

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

One thing I'm going back and forth over is whether I need some type of video playing mp3 player or not. This:

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDMX4-6144-S...8&s=electronics

Caught my eye. If I'm going to buy an mp3 player, I do want a good one that won't just break after a year or so. I've had my Sony cd player for nearly 8 years now and it still works just as great as when I got it.

Never used it, but going by brand name, I'd be fairly certain its a safe bet. Dunno how far 6 gigs will go with video though. Probably far enough, if you don't mind switching it out every couple of days.

I use Atrac files. I added had like 50 songs with 10 that were MP3, the rest were Atrac. So I deleted the MP3 files and converted them to Atrac. I saved so much space! I added 14 new songs and there is still 6 Mb more than before I converted the few to Atrac. Of course I use a PSP w/ a 1gb stick and I doubt you'd really want that for an MP3 player, because I don't think you can convert it to play on your car radio.

That doesn't look too bad, however I've not come across it before so I can't pass judgement :r

Well if you're wanting something lasting then don't go with an iPod you will regret it. The look nice, but they're more of a cosmetic rather than practical.

I do wonder why you want MP4 for it though? As you said it's for the car.

Most mp3 players, like mobile phones are designed to have a limited lifetime nowadays as newer versions are constantly coming onto the market, meaning that people aren't likely to keep the product for an extended period of time. So it's therefore useless for a company to put their efforts into making a product that lasts a long time when most of them will be thrown away after a while in favour of a newer version or whatever.

Apparently iPods are designed like this, however having said that, my iPod nano has lasted over a year now for me so yeah.

He's right.

And that's also why I suggested the Nano if any of the iPods.

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

I believe I've narrowed my choices to:

Creative Zen: http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000CS7U1C/re...3915996-5884741

and

Sandisk

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDMX4-6144-S...8&s=electronics

There are pros and cons to each.

Creative Zen:

Pro: 30 gb space, plays video unlike a nano, great reviews.
Con: Not wild about the buttons but I can learn. Price is a bit high but still reasonable.

Sandisk:

Pros: Cheaper price, plays video, easy to change battery. And it seems like there is some type of option to add more memory?
Cons: Reports of Freezing up, only 6GB though with my amount of music it shouldn't be a problem.

So any thoughts? I'm going to Best Buy either today or tomorrow to look these things over in person.

Yep dude. The SanDisk kicks ass. I personally have it and love it. It has good features and awesome memory space. You can watch movies and the radio as well as record the radio in case you miss a favorite on-air tune. :) I recommend that for ya.
