I was about to buy an iPod Video (i've had my nano since it first came out), and I'm in need of a new cell phone, so I might just wait for this (also just sold my ipod mini, extra cash towards the iPhone then).

Wasn't there something on the news about the name "iPhone" being owned by another company or something? I believe there was.

On a personal note: I hate cell phones.

You are right. Apple is having legal issues because another company has already registered that name long ago :)

Let's see, already have a phone, don't want an iPod, so I don't need this. But it does looks fancy and interesting.

Mmm, a reasonably overpriced phone with an 8Gb ipod built in, a funny screen size (mix between 4:3 and 16:9) and restricted to Apple-only pieces of software. Tag on to that, in the US, it's limited to one carrier and you have a decidedly uninspiring product.

Nothing it is giving is particularly revolutionary - ok, so it has the multi-touch sensor as opposed to just a single touch sensor, but other products offering this aren't too far behind - which for something that has been touted as reinventing the phone, and for something that stupidly expensive, you'd expect it to be a bit better than it is.

"That incorporate as much memory as a computer that if purchased four years ago would be around two thousand dollars"
Oh my, 4 years! It must be a bargain

"The phone integrates what every human needs"
Oxygen and water?

"combined with the slick body design"
A rectangle? My God, it is original

"Apple already an obvious monopoly of the mp3 industry"
Obviously.... I wouldn't touch apple with a barge poll. I'd rather buy a Microsoft product than an Apple product.

Why on this almighty spherical earth would I pay $349 for a glorified mp3 player? Let's do some maths:

At 64 kbps VBR WMA you can't hear the quality difference through regular ear phones. That's about 307 KB per minute of song. Assuming that each song lasts about 3.5 minutes on average, each song is around 1075 KB, which is 1.05 MB. An ipod has about 70 GB of memory on average today. This means I could fit about 68,266 songs on, a total playing time of 23 weeks. This is about a third of a year.

It really isn't that much trouble to add and remove music from an MP3 player. No one needs to hold 23 weeks of continuous music with them. Not only that but you have to pay for the music which is encrypted. Why would I buy it when I can have a normal 512 MB player which I can upload anything onto? "The ipod has menus". Yes it does....$300 menus!

You are right. Apple is having legal issues because another company has already registered that name long ago :)

Cisco Systems uses the trademark "iPhone" for Linksys' VoIP line of products. However, it's neither a cell phone nor an mp3 player, so I doubt they'll have much case in court.

Even if it not the same product, the other company own the right over that name, so apply will either have to pay them for the name, or change the name of their new phone, simple as that :)

Apple disagrees: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?RSS&newsid=8108

Also, if you live in Vermont, sorry, no iPhone for you!

I noticed in the Topic Description you added "Can't wait!"

My question: why?

It just seems like such a waste of money for somthing that is basically a big mobile phone and will run out of batteries within the first 5 minutes. ooooo exciting.......

@ Fusefox: You are right, maybe it won't give them a lot of problems, but it is still an inconvenience, you never know how the court will react :ermm:

@ TFMF: I do not think it will get drawn batteries in 5 minutes, it must be designed to have good batteries, but that is not important, taking in count it is a lot of money for something not that spectacular, I agree with you on that :r

Jeez Apple/iPod make everything now.

In some cases; I wish.

Anyways, I like the look of this... but like I said on another board I visit; if this iPhone is as reliable as the iPod I'm soooo going to stay away from it. But, for the time being; it looks nice, has loads of features and is made by a nicely designed company.

I wish it look.
