Detective puts spoke in fugitive's escape Dylan Welch January 19, 2007 - 9:08AM A quick thinking inner city detective commandeered a bicycle from a passer-by in Surry Hills overnight and set off in pursuit of a suspect who had escaped after being arrested. The pedal-powered pursuit occurred after detectives from Redfern police arrested an 18-year-old Mascot man on Eveleigh Street, Redfern, over a theft at about 9.50pm. The suspect managed to escape from custody and fled north on Regent Street, crossing the train lines. Two minutes later police in the area on a separate matter saw the suspect reappear from the train tracks and run towards Woodburn Lane, and then onto Cleveland Street. Police chased the offender on foot, but Detective Sergeant Mark Carter quickly decided a pursuit vehicle was required and stopped a nearby bicycle rider. "I'm not sure what type of bike it was, but he's managed to grab it and get after the suspect," said Inspector Murchie. Detective Carter was able to quickly catch up to the running suspect, and crash tackled him from the bike. The detective dislocated his left shoulder in the process but managed to hold onto the struggling suspect until officers on foot caught up and handcuffed him. The suspect was taken to Redfern police station and charged with stealing, assaulting police, resisting arrest, and trespassing. He spent the night in cells and will face Central Local Court today. Detective Carter was taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital and treated for his injured shoulder. He was released about 1.30am, and is currently recovering at home. Inspector Murchie confirmed Detective Carter is being considered for some sort of official recognition for his outstanding - if unusual - collar. Detective Carter's colleagues have also joked about considering a potential movie deal. "2GB's talking about making a film out of it, Mel Gibson in the lead role, so I think we're all systems go," said Inspector Joel Murchie. Police said that they have returned the bike to its owner. |

Man, that not even unusual. Unusual would have been him taking a kid's skateboard, catching up with the dude, finding a makeshift ramp with a plywood board out in the middle of nowhere riding onto it then jumping off to do a 540 kickflip then tackling to the ground on the landing. |

I've seen cops on bikes before, like at National Parks and stuff. Sometimes in town too; though that's a lot less common. |

Sounds like something that would happen in a movie about detectives / police. |
