On other forums, do you see spelling errors in the description, is it just me or am i the only one that checks the spelling in my desciption... (Now i'm just worried i'll spell something wrong in this post lmao!) Anyways, do you check your spelling when creating your forums with the description..?

I've seen some really obvious ones like 'Aind' (And) or Reqire (Require) and Becouse (Because)... But i think it makes it look dreadful and horrible and makes it look like the forum is run by some children in reception... (No offense).. I would post the forum URL's but i then discovered that this would be crewl.. But please, check your forum descriptions otherwise it will put some people off joining... For Example... I found this in someones forum when I was eager but then found this out.....

A forum

Regestor Now, It will brung you excalent rewerds, so join now and becum apert of this cummunite!!

Honestly, would you want to read that (I've pm'd the owner of this forum and told him about this because I wanted the best for him lol)..

I must have made my self look really ignorant and horrid.. But this is a big issue isn't it lol??

Now that you read this please check your forums >_<

Please, i wouldn't have of posted this but I feel I need too, please could someone back me up, just one person..? :-/

Yeah, I look at spelling (and grammar ) as one of the factors when judging a forum.

Or a poster.

Yes Indeed, it seems not many folk under 20 can spell these days! Appalling!

Can anyone get this nifty spellcheck by jacuba working?

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.jacuba.com/service/checker/-/-/" defer="defer"></script>

<body onload="if (window.Jacuba) Jacuba.applyTo('element: TEXTAREA')">
</body>

<textarea></textarea>

test here

I'm put off a forum when the admins and mods can't spell or use proper grammar. It is not so bad in normal posts but it is in announcement forums and the description of each forum, etc.

I do look for that. I make sure everything I type is spelled correctly because that’s just a knack of mine. Even when I created my forum a couple years ago, I tried to keep everything spelled correctly because I knew myself that if the forum looked good on first sight, then it would attract people. Just like the cover of a book I suppose. But ya, grammar is a must and I have still messed up a few times with such words like RECEIVE with the e coming before the “I”, but I have learned from that now.

Yeah, I check for spelling, as well, when viewing a forum. If there's a whole lot of mistakes, it makes it less appealing to me. My own forum happens to be one of those that I try to keep spelling error at a minimum (at least when managing forums), due to the fact that it looks sloppy if the forum has lots of mistakes.

Plus, for some reason, my board can only be viewed by Firefox users (I have no idea why, but IE doesn't link the buttons when pressed)...so there's a spell-check pre-embedded into it.

You should take into consideration that some people may perhaps have a learning deficiency. How will you then feel when you go mouthing off about spelling errors and are replied with that sort of response?

I don't particularly set out to look at how good or bad a forum's grammar/spelling are, it's just something that can be noticed, like the skin. Typos are understandable, but leaving them after they've been discovered is bad. Especially if they're in the board rules, pinned topic titles (one of my mods always fixes the typos if I happen to make in topic titles, I don't mind), forum descriptions, forum names, etc.

I am proud to say that, last time I checked, my boards rules, descriptions, etc all had perfect grammar and spelling. ^_^

If they have a learnign deficiency and can't spell,, how would they learn to use a forum?

While this is true, I do have a mild case of dyslexia, so I know a thing or two about not being able to easily put forth thoughts to words in an intelligible manner, as anyone who talks to me via IM.

However, with a few simple things, spell check main among them, its fairly simple to take a few extra seconds and see in your official things like Announcements or Descriptions that you spelled them correctly, which is what the original poster was pointing out.

Anyone over ten years old who still cannot spell certainly does have a learning deficiency! In most cases this is voluntary, kids cannot be bothered learning these days, they are too busy smoking crack or stabbing their teachers!

So true. I haven't voluntarily cured by dyslexia because it gets in the way of my crack and professor stabbing hobbies.

Mildly insulting.

Having learning difficulties doesn't necessarily mean you can't read, you know.

I agree with you on that front, but perhaps using spell-check could cause even more confusion in the sense that it can bring back multiple results.

If anything, those with learning deficiencies are more determined to learn what they lack in terms of their difficulties.

True enough, but a majority of the things are pretty simple to figure out with aid of a spell check. I mean, not to mention that if you are doing something as important as a forum description, maybe spending the extra time making sure its right isn't such a horrible idea. Your point has merit when applied to single posts, but not as much when applied to something as important as what the original poster pointed out.
