What exactly are "hits"
For example, when I am viewing the boards, it says a certain one has 40. What are they and how do you get them?

A "Hit" is based on the amount of people (sometimes including times that people) click on wherever the hit is targetted at. So for example, each time someone clicks the Zetaboards Beta link in the Invisionfree index the hit amount will increase.

Oh, thanks. So if I went to the index, went to fantasy/medieval rpg's, and clicked on the link to warquest, it would gain a hit?

If you mean in the Invisionfree Board Directory, then no, they froze the hits in the directory.
It would be easier if you gave an exact link to where you're talking about though.

So if I just put "www.s6.invisionfree.com/warquest" in my url box and go to it, you're saying it will gain a hit?

Yup, though it's pretty pointless to worry about hits without a hit counter. :-/

Here's a definition for you:

A connection made to a website over the Internet or another network: Our company's website gets about 2,000 hits daily.

Don't work for me... and by typing it into my url it didn't give me one hit on the forum index. That's what I am curious about.

That's because it's based not on the total hits the site gets, it's based on the number of times people from your board click the link on your board. :)

Why'd they end up freezing that "hits" thing anyways? I thought it was a great feature so the boards get noticed.

People would click the link and the back button on their browser repeatedly just to gain tons of hits for their board or someone elses. It was a popular thing until the staff found out and disabled it.

Long story short, People abused the system and it was taken away. Like the saying goes "one bad apple ruins the whole bunch"

Just to point out: hit counters count the total visitors to your site, the InvisionFree Board Directory hits are completely different. It counts the number of unique IPs that click on the specific Board Directory link to access the site (not the typical URL (http://z1.invisionfree.com/your_website) but the special Board Directory URL (http://z1.invisionfree.com/directory.php?go=xxxxxx)). But that said, the hits were indeed frozen and won't be returning. Brandon has a new method intended to make the directory fair on both large and small boards to prevent cheating and dominance.
