Why havent I gotten any yet? My forum was created January 12th 2007.
I've been looking forward to the new member accounts. I think I would be able to keep it under control if it ever happened. I would get members and posts out of it.

You will start getting them eventually

Where your at never got them.

Not yet. But the board I was at before the one i am at now had gotten alot of them

I was on a friends board a few days ago, and he had a new member who posted some videos. I didn't think about it, but clicked on one of the links and ended up getting 8 virus. I was able to clean out most of them, but 2 trojans are still on that computer, which I shut down until it can be cleaned. One of the virus that cant be removed is a keylogger. I'm not sure what the other is. I was shocked to find out(since I figured the "person" was a bot...but they are posting smarter :ermm: ) it was a japanese bot(usually the nasty ones are russian)

I had always felt it was unwise to click any of their links as you have no way of what they may do to your computer when you click on them but some of those bots are clever and seem like a person posted it to those who aren't familar with them and how to spot them.

I make a point of removing everything from the post and then trashing it via multi mod and then banning the bot as they sometimes do come back to spam the forums again. I saw one bot that had made two topics in the same night so they don't always just post once as some make return trips to post more spam.

Today I saw a post in a Spanish forum (Not hosted in Invisionfree) and I saw a post promoting something. I took me some time it was a bot. the post was very well structured and it looked like a human's post. They are getting smarter and that is no good -_-

I plan on releasing the list of E-Mail extensions for everyone to blog block as spam robots. Hopefully this can contribute to the fight against spam robots!

I don't even think the spammers are taking Invisionfree seriously anymore.

Look at the one I just banned:

abanersterup@invisionspam.org

Is that a joke?? :O

And the best part is that the new breed is able to post about 15 of these messages, per account... -.-

^Make it admin validation only, and don't let validating users post AT ALL. Easiest way to stop them, yet get members at the same time. If it's a suspicious looking email, then delete it. if you're not sure, then PM them, allow them to PM you back, and if they don't reply within 5 days, delete them, cause they're bottish nubz.

Well, I suppose that would stop the bots. True.

It would also stop you from really getting any new members though.... :-/

yeah admin validation is only really needed during a security risk like someone is threatening your board with cracking or something like that.

e-mail validation helps catch some of them and also banning commonly used e-mails also helps stop them from doing anything to you. it's not that hard as it is only a matter of removing their post and banning the account and you are done.

Almost one year ago, I created a forum to acompany a website in a website competition. After the competition ended, the forum was left, and after being bored in a lesson today, I decided to have a look at it. I was in the ACP fiddling around, when one of my friends who helped create the site told me that there were nine pages worth of members. I thought he must have had the members list on 10 at a time, but amazingly, he replied that it was on 50 members at a time!

Almost 420 spam robots had signed up in the space of ONE YEAR!

If the IF admins would like to know the board URL, please PM me. I can assure you that they are all spam robots. I have trashed all of their topics, and am going to mass ban all of their accounts.

I still find this quite amazing, that almost 450 spam robots found this forum and joined.

I now have to clean up the "Chit Chat" section, which contains 250 spam topics, all created by these robots.

Back when spam bots were a big problem for my board, we got 5-15 a day.

Toushe', that's a good point for using Admin Validation, but my method works just as well. Besides, deleting posts from bots constantly can get annoying and frustrating. Prevent them from posting keeps the statistics with the board more realistic as well. Just depends on how you view it I guess ^_^.

I typically delete them and for the most part they never come back but one bot was persisent.

it made an account and then I deleted it.

it made a second account and I deleted that one too.

it then made a third account and posted once and then I banned it and deleted the topic.

so I myself delete them but you can ban them too if you need to especially when they keep on coming back and make new accounts like that one did. I know it was the same bot because it kept using the same exact username for all of its accounts.

It's better to IP ban, or email ban, since bots generally have the same domain names or such, buuuut they have slightly different emails against the account and similar usernames. Oh well, admin validation makes it easy ^_^.

@invisionspam.org looks like it's set to do just that. Spam Invision(Free).

I advise everyone to block this address from their forum.
