Yes there is. Posting long is better than posting: "I thinks global warmin neds to stop cause its gettin warmer every yearr." Instead you could post: "I really beleive global warming needs to be halted before the greenhouse gazes warm up the rest of the world. Heres some related links: http://thislink.com http://anotherlink.com" |

I got tired of writing out well thought out posts in response to questions only to have them either A- Answered by people who obviously didn't read the entire post, or B- Just not addressed at all. There were a couple of people (yourself included) that made discussions fun and interesting. The majority, however, acting like children, and thus made the place unbearable after a while. |

I still browse the forums but I find my will to debate is pretty much sapped these days - and not just on this board. Recently I've only replied to a few debate topics across the boards I do visit and nothing much changed; either my posts were skipped over or some oaf with the mental agility of an Argos catalogue decided to rip apart the very basics of logic and reasonable debate. You can only point out logical fallacies and why they don't make any sense so many times before you want to kick someone hard enough to ensure they don't spawn a second generation. ![]() Perhaps the upgrade and restoration of full service to this board will bring an influx of activity and revive it but I wouldn't bet on it doing much good in the long run. Simple fact is there are more young people who lack any real experience or understanding on the internet these days. Of course, over the last six years I've been around access has become more widespread than ever so anyone and everyone can get on. A good thing for many I suppose but I think communities have seriously suffered because of it. It seems a lot of young people aren't willing to commit time and effort so anything beyond a paragraph (if that) is pretty much ignored (or worse, they do respond), there's no real understanding of debating etiquette and the reliance on Wikipedia as a sole source of information is rather astonishing. I have nothing against youth, I like to consider myself relatively young but there's been a significant increase in people aged 13 - 16, and even younger, and a lot of them display the understandable but frustrating naïvety that comes with a lack of experience. Or perhaps the age thing is merely a coincidence and people are just gradually getting dumber. *shrugs*I was one of the people who supported its creation. :-/ It was good while it lasted though. I just don't have the patience these days, and it's not just debating. Like I said, communities have suffered as a whole and I find little of interest anymore (albeit, I do think this particular board offers more than most; polls on colours, hobbies, personal details, etc. are repeated weekly elsewhere <_<). Truth is I only ever come back to my haunts because of the bonds I have with people who made the last 3 years a lot of fun for me. I wouldn't choose to join most communities these days, and indeed I find I'm highly selective now.</longwindedgrumbling>

People tend not to read the a whole thread. If you seriously cannot be bothered to read the thread from start to finish, or if you're even going to read between the lines then you shouldn't post at all. If you want a good debate you should want to be challenged, and you should want to challenge other people and get your points across, as well as perhaps taking other's points into consideration. |

I've never quite understood what "read between the lines" means. What does it mean? |

Who, me? Looking at your join date, I was probably before your time, so to speak. I was a moderator for about two years. And to be honest, I was never really away...inactive perhaps but I still lurked.
Nothing is quite black and white. It's simple enough to read the words but if you don't understand the meaning behind them then you've failed to digest the point. It's known as subtext, the underlying or implicit meaning. |

*Wahoo, thank you I hope you enjoyed that grumble Jay? ![]() Edit: Correct, the 'Java Hut' isn't that deserted, however, it is deserted of those who are interesting to debate with (no offence to the current who debate there). Maybe I might give it another chance soon? |
