If you want a really easy and FREE photo editing program with a gradient tool, go here, and download it.

Once you install and run the program, in the upper left-hand corner you'll see this: Posted Image button.

Click it to start a new image. It will ask you to set the dimensions of the blank image you want; set the width to 6 and the length to somewhere around 35 for a decent .maintitle gradient. When you've done that, look to the left of the screen where all the tools are. You'll see this: Posted Image button.

You can easily tell it's a gradient tool. Just click it and drag the cursor across your blank image a couple times and you'll get the hang of it.

This program gives you a bunch of options to save your image as when you feel that you're done. I usually save it as a .png. Just make a post in a forum you made for images at your own board, and upload the gradient you saved to your computer there. When you've done that, right click on the uploaded image in the post, and go to "Properties"; there you can find and copy the image's URL to use in your CSS. It should all work out fine. B)
