![]() VAN HELSING is not a film, it's a firecracker held by writer/director Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY, DEEP RISING). It's a string of razzle dazzle and popping noises designed to enrapture a audience for an overlong running time of 2 and a half hours, but, sadly, Sommers fails.... miserably. And the only thing left in your mind as you walk out of the theatre playing this mind-numbing mess is: Storytelling can never be truly replaced by pure CGI action set pieces. But, boy, Sommers really, really, really does try. The film opens with a beautiful black & white sequence mixing the Universal movie monster staples, such as burning windmills and angry villagers with torches with the new, such as an over-the-top Richard Roxburgh, busily desecrating Bram Stoker's classic horror character. And the film takes off. We meet Van Helsing, as played by Hugh Jackman, in a misty Paris alley, hunting Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, who has freshly killed a young woman. The inevitable battle, which takes place atop a tower, sets the tone for the film. Non-stop and artificial. Sommers continues to throw new characters and villians at us, yes, but it doesn't matter. They're all but tools used to craft more and more CGI-crafted blasts of action. And, as an audience member, I eventually wanted to pat Sommers on the back and say "Stop now, this is enough action for a few moments...," but, after seeing the film, I can't help but feel he'd probably say "BUT, HOW CAN I STOP THIS SCENE?! THE CGI WOLF MAN CAN CRASH ANOTHER CGI BIT OF THIS CASTLE AND WE COULD.....WE COULD....WE COULD HAVE A VAMPIRE CHICK WHO IS LIKE REALLY HOT SHOW UP OUT OF NOWHERE AND LIKE THROW SOMEONE THROUGH A WALL OR MAYBE EVEN LIKE THROW A COW INTO THE AIR FOR A LAUGH! I CAN'T STOP!" It's rabid filmmaking by a man obsessed with comic-books and video-games. If you're infected with ADD, dig in, but for those of us who still remember blockbusters with characters and humor, just keep the wallet closed this weekend. 3/10. |

I thought it was cool how they tied in Dracula, Werwolf, and Frankenstien. |
