However, Google may have gone a little too far on this Martin Luther King day, when its logo was changed to a "Google" featuring what appears to be a noose hanging from the second 'g'.

"This is an absolute outrage", said Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland. When asked if Google should face criminal charges, he added "They should hang for this".

Google has a tradition of being the 'groovey' mid twenties sensation, using humor and a light-hearted atmostphere to pull in its users, making it the number one search engine available on the internet. It recieves more search queries per day than any other webpage, and has a multitude of other websites dedicated to its name, even one which pits one search term against another to see which brings up more pages.

When reached for comment, Google Co-Founder and President Sergey Brin offered a press release stating "We stand by our decision to post the logo. In these days of political correctness, these people need to learn to just take a joke." In contrast to these harsh words, Google did take down the logo and any references to it early in the day, most likely in fear of the African-American lash back.

I agree with Google... it's just a joke..I'm always bombarded with Jewish jokes (although I'm not Jewish, my grandfather is though) and I know when people are joking.

Yeah people really do need to learn the difference between a joke/satirical image and a company/someone actually descriminating against a minority group. We as a people get upset at everything these days, to me there are much more serious issues than google having a somewhat 'unprofessional' sense of humor.

[edit]I hadn't heard anything about this nor saw it originally...is there a link to the actual logo? (as in on google webspace like THIS one) or at least to the original article that you quoted. It's just not something I see google doing, though I don't think it'd be wrong if they did.

I know it's a joke but they didn't have to go and do that, I'm part african american so I know what it feels like, all you other people out there who aren't african american are probably like 'well it's just a joke' or 'lighten up, its just a joke'. Well it's a pretty harsh joke..

I may not be African American, but I have had jokes made at my expense and descriminated against in other ways. Even so, a joke is way different than actual discrimination and the key is knowing the difference. However, I kind of think this all might be fake...I can't find anything about it.

A joke is one thing, but that crosses the line of what I think would be acceptable as a “joke”.

Shame on you for even speaking those words! :@

1. Martin Luther King Jr. was not hung, but shot
2. It's not funny
3. They could have done something a bit nicer, and kinder.

I don't even get the joke.

I'm wondering what would have happened if the person who came up with this idea was, himself, black. Would it have gotten a different response?? I seriously think it would..
