Many people think that slipknot is gothic because they are probably one of the best know heavy-metal artist. So when people think of slipknot, they think metal, and when they think metal they think gothic. But really, when people think of real gothic/black metal as in Hecate, As I Lay dying, ect...they don't know who the hell they are.

Slipknot is nothing but posers. There stuff was cool up untill iowa came out, then they just starting singing S*** that people whanted.

Um, that's what entertainers do, they entertain peopl.e If they didn't play what people liked who would listen to them.

Anyways i think it's become ridiculous the way everything is perfectly categorized. Symphonic power metal? Come on. just f***** call it gothic or metal.

He probably tried to say bands should stick to their own style, rather then changing to a much more basic formula because people wanted that. For a band that proudly states "People = ****" that isn't the right thing to do. Unique sound is what makes or breaks a band, and now they sound, like, standard.

That'd put Nightwish in the same little box as Cradle of Filth. :/ I'm sure you're aware those bands have almost nothing in common. I'll post my old definition of "gothic metal" so that everybody can see if their bands are goth or not.

Gothic Metal:
Dark, atmospheric, melodic music. Pretty self explanatory really. I mean, it's "metal" in terms of it containing some degree of heaviness (which does vary, as some gothic metal bands can be very melodic, almost non-metal) and mixes this with dark, gothic music, gothic themes, dark sounds, keyboards, flutes... whatever the band feels like using to help create a sound. Gothic metal is more centered around moods, sadness, depression, melancholy... things like that. Vocals vary as well, they can be clean, growled, whispered, female, or all of them combined. In terms of speed, gothic metal may be fast, but it is usually mid-paced to slow (compared to black and death) to further help create a darker and more atmospheric sound.

I hope that helps. :)

The Rasmus gothic? I'd kill myself if they were ever considered gothic.

Again Lib, I think it's because of their appearance.
Black nail polish and eye shadow. Which is goth, not gothic.

Or maybe just some peoples idea of gothic rock is differen't from yours. Your categorizing things so much that every band is going to be there own genre. They all don't have to sound the same to be in a certain genre.

format, have you ever seen MCR live? before they were huge...
it was a great show, i saw em just after three cheers for sweet revenge had just come out and they played the new stuff from there and a lot of bullets/love album.

umm yeah i have been an mcr fan for a few years now:)

and their first album is definately better than their new one. And yes they are gothic..not gothic metal, gothic punk.

NOFX CUZ DEY R SOO GAWTHIK

I kid, I kid. :P I guess I mainly listen to Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, that kind. They're more black metal though. :/ I do have a couple songs of Moonspell.

Oh yeah, and I classify Nightwish as power metal, definitely not gothic.

I suppose you missed my first post in this thread, as it's quite a list of bands that are gothic, by my definion. Most of them definately don't sound alike. At any rate, there's always something as a definate definion of genres; when I state Britney Spears' music is gothic metal pretty much everybody is going to disagree with me. When vermillius asked if The Rasmus is considered gothic metal, pretty much everybody agreed it isn't. They're generic pop-metal.

Furthermore the idea behind genres is to categorize music.. :r
