Can you use any parts from your old computer (monitor, speaker, mouse etc.)? Any preferences on HDD size? Are you overclocking? Do you need Windows XP?

I never suggest sticking with the PSU that came with your case unless it's an Antec. They seem like the only ones that come with quality PSU's. Going Intel would also be stupid for a gaming rig.

This would be good if you are not overclocking.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - $146.00
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Socket 939 - $122.00
Antec SONATA w/ 380w PSU - $99.00
Corsair Value Select 1GB(512x2) - $82.55
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA 80GB w/NCQ - $68.00
POWERCOLOR Radeon X800XL w/ Hitman Contracts and DVD software - $289.00

That may give you a good idea of what to get. I don't know if you need monitor, mouse, speakers or anything like that though. Tell me any preferences such as monitor size too.

another idea would be to find out if their are any computer shows in your area and plan on going to one of those and talk to the people their for help (and also you know where you got the parts so if their is a problem you can take them somewhere). I only say this because we've ran into problems with ordering computer parts online and find it is just as cheap if not cheaper to go to a show and buy the parts.

This is what I have, and it runs really good for gaming, though you might want and AMD processor.

Intel P4 3.0
Ultra X-Connect 500 watt power supply
Ultra Case (with clear sides- its really big and easy to work around in.
nVidia GeForce 6800
Western Digital 200gb HD
Bunch of fans
CDRW
Floppy Drive
Microsoft Digital Pro Keyboard (This thing is awesome. Has zoom and volume controls, plus several shortcut buttons. I love it)

And of course, high speed internet-preferably cable.

And if you want, get a sound card, such as a Sound Blaster Autigy 2, though if that goes to far above your price range, on boaord sound isn't bad these days.

Runs really good, and it was about $1000

well for parts... im getting a DVD Drive of some sorts.... lol... and a 60 GB Hard Drive... EDIT: forgot to say those are free and brand new.
im getting 2 of one of them... not sure which tho... lol, i can live without a new mouse, keyboard, etc... for now... im just building a tower... i have the rest... including a decent monitor... although i wouldnt mind a second monitor to dual screen... not sure what is needed for that... <.< i have an E-Machine Cathode Flatscreen... or that what it looks like anyways... lol

thx for the input so far... hey kooldrew... would an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ be worth getting over the 3000+?

Don't got with a case PSU unless its made by like Antec or a good company that you know the PSU will be good. Try going AMD unless you really want to get Intel. Try adn get 1 gig or RAM it is really coming down in price now. As for video card go nVidia 6600GT or 6800.

As far as mobo you really can't decide on one untill you have your processor picked out. I would say get a mobo like a 939 for AMD and get it with PCI-E even though its not really needed now its going to take of AGP within a couple of years.

What resolution will you be gaming at? What games will you be playing? For overclocking this would be good.

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D - $135.00
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ - $146.00
ThermalRight XP-90 - $36.99
Panaflo 92x25mm Ultra High Speed - $8.95
OCZ Value VX - $114.95
Antec Performance Plus Case with True Power 430W PS - $120.00
eVGA 6800GT
Arctic Silver 5

lets see... i play mainly FPS, and MMORPG's... Unreal Tournament 2004 and Final Fantasy XI currently... and i prefer to game at 1024x768 res if i dont lose anything...

that last set up looks really nice... just one ?... the heatsink doesnt list that AMD as compatable... but does list similiar... just wondering if you know that they work together...

If you only wwant to run your games at that low of a resolutrion get yourself a cheaper card. I recommended a 6800GT just because you could overclock it to Ultra speeds (one of the best card available). If you are only going to run games like that at that low of a resolution though you don't need something as powerful as a 6800GT.

Also yes the XP-90 will fit. With that set up you should be able to get 2.8GHz on st6ock voltage. Maybe 3GHz with a little more voltage. I am building a system almost identical to that soon.

You could get the 3200+ just for the 10x multiplier though. Make sure to get the one with the Venice core (rev E.). I have only seen Monarch have them in stock.

hell... if that set up will allow higher res gaming... id rather have that... i prefer 1024 because thats the most my computer now can handle... lol... but if i can go for better... id definatly want too... ^.^

i currently have approx $300-400 and will soon start buying parts, if i dont buy it with money i have now.. it'll never get built... lol
