self-teaching is best i feel, u can work at your own pace. Best to learn all the chords first, memorise about 100 - 200 of the basic ones. then learn the scales of Guitar. knowing the scales can help to improvise (which is what most guitarists do anyway!)

Lessons for the guitar. I actually have a lesson in two hours, oddly enough that I should see this topic today. My teacher has been playing for 40+ years I think, and he's amazing. He writes out some shorthand for me, and I learn to play the chords of a song before the leadlines. I pick a song and he teaches it to me in addition to a book he picked for me, which focuses on theory. I'm getting a classical book so I can learn that too, since I can sight read pretty well.

On another note, I play piano and I used to play violin.
