Support Embryonic Stem Cell Research Many people are against stem cell research because they do not understand completely what it means. There should really be no reason for it to be controversial. In this topic I will tell you why. The Methods Some people believe that the methods for obtaining stem cell research are wrong, because, just like abortion, we are "taking a potential life". Well, this is untrue in most cases. As of right now, we have a few dozen frozen human embryos that never will develop into a full human. They simply have lost the potential, being frozen and all. Also, many of the embryos associated with stem cell research and therapeutic cloning (cloning organs) are not even "embryos" in the traditional sense. They were never fertilized by a sperm cell. Instead, an unfertilized egg is recieved from a female donor. Then, the nucleus of the egg is sucked out and replaced with the DNA from the host. Then, the egg cell is stimulated to divide, and stopped when it has around 8 cells. Then, scientists are free to experiment with the egg. The egg has around a 1 in 500,000 chance of developing past this point. If it does, it may become a reproductive clone of an existing human being, with many medical complications and probable death at an early age. These eggs are developed for lab purposes only, they would never be allowed to develop into a human anyway, so the argument that it is a "potential life" is irrelevant. The Results The possibilities are endless. Patients in the future could have specially matched organ transplants, with no risk of their immune system rejecting the organ. Cures could be developed for Alzeimer's, cancer, heart disease, Parkinson's, paralysis, and possibly even brain damage (Terry Schiavo could possibly have been cured had we had this technology. So could Christopher Reeve, and Ronald Reagan). What's more pro-life than spending a bit of money today to save millions of lives in the future? Besides, consider this. In the future, stem cell research could possibly eliminate the need for abortions. The embryo/fetus could be transplanted into an "artificial womb" and allowed to deveop to birth, rather than having to be aborted. It's a win-win. "Playing God" If you consider such research out of humanity's domain, then consider this: If people back then had said that medicinal research was "playing God", we'd still be killed by easily preventable diseases such as smallpox and the bubonic plague. So, support stem cell research. It will help save lives in the future. |

Even though chances are very slim, this is still a very good prospect in the development of cures and the improvement of the human race. This is not ''playing God'' in anyway, you could think of this as developing what God has set out for the Human race to do. |

So, what will happen once the fetus develops? Will the child be sent to a foster home?
I support stem cell research. |

That's quite irrelevant, but yes, they will most likely be put up for adoption. |

I've supported it from Day 1, and I'm a Republican. I don't know why Bush sees this as non-beneficial. We have everything to gain from it, and would more than likely lead to the cures of many diseases. The times are changing, and this is opportunity. I believe it's only a matter of time before we're fully able to benefit from, and granted the right to stem cell research. |

I also, agree with it, and the people who disagree, are know-it-alls, who don't know-it-all, and don't even research the topic, they just state an opinion... nice post btw

A little less stereotypical post would be better, next time, IMO. You can't possibly say that everyone against this practice is ignorant. |

And how do you think they were before they were frozen? They still had that potential! And using the excuse that many lives would have been saved had we have used stem cell research in the past when refering to playing God is absolutely ridiculous. I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in any playing God. But when you stick that egg and that sperm cell together, you have made a child. It's not able to live on its own yet, but you have created a baby. If aborting your child when pregnant is killing a baby, so is this. I support stem cell research to the extent of not combining that sperm and egg. That's the last point at which no life is taken. In NO CIRCUMSTANCE should a life be taken. Ever. |
