Okay, this is half debate/half political type thing. I was talking to my sister about this earlier today coinceidently. Back way back when as the British Empire spread across the globe and Napoleans French armies were busy conquering various other parts of the world ancient artifacts were stolen from their home countries and put on display in such places as the British Museum and the Musee Dorsee. The question is, we are no longer colonial invaders, should we give the artifcats back? Yes, in case you havnt been to the British Museum or somewhere alike (i have :)) we still have ALOT of what we stole. Namingly the Rossetta stone which is on display in the BM (the thing they used to decipher hyroglyphs). The Egyptian authorites have reportedly asked for the items back, but us being us we have refused. In a similar case the French when asked for an item back gave the Egyptians a plaster copy. Now thats just mocking them imo. I believe they should be given back. Returned home. Where they would be a real national treasure. I suppose the argument for the British Museum is they've had them for ages. But i personally dont see that as a remotely strong argument. Thoughts? |

If the country from which they originated asks for them back, then yes, they should be given back. They are, after all, stolen property. |
