It takes the ability not to request to be one.

Common sense. Never make a member part of your staff unless you trust him and he has a good knowledge of the board. DO NOT
ever let a member become part of your staff, if he asks to be, or is a frequent spammer and also, seldom comes to the board. It's basically all about trust, ability, and dependibilty.

Yes, it's that simple, you should not have to train the staff member. :/

I think this board has enough Moderators already. You can always help out by solving peoples' problems in the Support Section.

I'm not sure there's any set rules here.
When I was offered a staff position, I'd only been using IF for a month and a half or so.
But I had already read all the documentation here and most of the stuff in code snippets before ever posting anywhere but general chat.
So I guess that was a good sign, as all my posts made it look like I knew what I was doing.
Add to that the fact that I'm online way too much, and I live on the west coast of the US, which a different time zone from most, if not all, of the other staff.
I think somebody lives in California, but I'm not sure.
And I'm pretty polite.
Even if you piss me off, I'll find nice and polite ways to insult and berate you here and there instead of being really rude and obvious about it.

It depends on how your forum is set up and what it's all about, I suppose.
Here we have support and community mods, and neither has to know how to do the other, but most end up doing both.
Except Rory, because he refuses to start his own forum and learn all the ins and outs.
Too much school and girls and all that I guess.
What a shame, all that reality when he could have a shiny new forum take up all his time.
But he has good judgement and makes a good community mod.

Anyway, I think those are the main things.
• They should know more about whatever your forum is about than the average member would.
• They should be online fairly often, if not regularly.
• They should ideally be in different time zones from each other so you're more likely to always have a staff member on, or at least the chance of it.
• They should be willing to spend time helping people and enforcing the rules, and be able to deal with all the people that will be sending them pm's and generally seeking their attention.
• And they should obey the rules themselves, of course.
• You should trust them.

You might also want to give them limited powers to begin with, to test their reaction.
Some people can't resist taking advantage of whatever powers they have.
And I tell people, before giving anybody admin access, ask yourself if you'd trust them with the keys to your house while you go on vacation.
Because that's pretty much what you're doing.

Nicely said PhranK. Now we all know how to recruit people into our staff. Anyone else interested about this and other suggestions and on how to recruit ppl? I think PhranK mostly covered it.

Thanks PhranK.

*tRyStRiKe sits reading the thing that PhranK wrote so fast that his eyes blur.

Great man. This speech is really useful. I'm going outta the house and I wonder who I can trust my keys with... PHRANK!! lol kidding.

I am going out of the house tho, when I get back i'll quote this in my forum to my members so they can see what is expected to be a staff member.

that's pretty good. that's about how fast i type. but i won't let someone on my board become an admin or mod unless i know and trust them to enforce the rules and everything else that goes with being an admin/mod
