Wasn't trying to blame the media because I agree. It is a 2 sided sword. If it wasn't for the media people wouldn't act as they do. But, if it wasn't for the people that the media target the media wouldn't provide us with that which we accept. It goes both ways. You can't just blame one group or one thing. You have to look at all sides. I totally agree with you on the mariage thing. More people need to find the one they are most compatible with and care the most about. Rather than the person that gets them in bed the fastest (which might be your soul mate... who knows lol). |

We could blame the medii for all our problems is what this discussion comes down to. But as many people said, it isn't the media's fault that their tactics in making us all mindless drones concerned with fashion. After you look at what these models have reduced themselves to, ie more silicon than human, suddenly I don't mind that I waste my money on enlargements, tummytucks, hairdye, manicures, pedicures, top line clothes.... |

My problem with most people that get plastic surgery is that they are making themselves fake in more than one way. First, they are making their bodies fake. They are putting things into themselves that shouldn't be there and making their apperance look wrong. Second, they are making their personality fake. They are changing who they are both on the outside and the inside and making it so they treate others worse (most cases). If more people would just accept people for who they are rather then how they look then we would be a much kinder race. We wouldn't have neerly as many hate crimes, fights, wars, and teen deaths. This is becoming a real problem and it isn't just a physical problem... it is a mental one. |

Large boobs and being skinny are as a combo so rare these days because most of women's boobs are made out of fat

Why is the media set to carry the burden for the way people live their life? They're not telling you what to wear. You don't wake up in the morning and consult the media on the day's outfit, the media has nothing to do with the bad choices people make, so why should they hold so much reasponsibility for the people who make them? Why should they have to be spit in the face by the everyday ugly black sheep teenager? I don't think they should... |

It's not so much that they come out right and say "dress this way today" as the fact that 90% of the people they show are the typical "normal" stereotype. People see this as teenagers and think that they must look that way to be "normal" and anything less is bad. The media doesn't show a relistic image of "normal" and that is where the problem lies. That is why the media must take the rap. |

I'm a blonde dude too. Anyway, back to the discussion at hand (for me anyway). I get what your saying, that the media presents the idea of how teenagers and such should look, but the way I see it is that everyone is responsible for their own actions. And when it comes right down to it, the media doesn't make the decision to stick the finger down your throat to make yourself look skinnier, or suffer through the pain of dying your hair so you can be a blonde. You make the decision and the media shouldn't be taking the rap for the bad choices we as teenagers CHOOSE to make. |

It's the motivation behind it though. People make stupid choices; always have, and always will. While the media isn't solely to blame, one does have to turn a critical eye on it: being a teen is most likely very awkward for just about everyone. Teens want to fit in, find their place in life. Going along with what seems to be a general standard would be a logical place to start. While it's not the media physically doing it, they plant the seed. I'd like to see people who are stressed about appearance put in a different society with a completely different set of values and beliefs. What would happen? |

I agree, too much emphasis. I mean, beauty is nice, but it should not be a prerequisite for a relationship. |

You make a very interesting point, so I'm going to have to back off and agree with the rest of you. Though it's against my better judgement, as the media is psychologically reasponsible for most stress on a teenager, I agree. |

No don't back off. We aren't trying to make you follow us. That is no better than people trying to force you into a religion you don't believe in. We are simply stating our view on it. If you choose to rethink your opinion that is fine but don't back down if you don't believe it is right. I agree that the media doesn't directly tell us that we have to look a certain way. They almost use subliminal messages tho to tell us how we must look. It may not be on purpose either but it is there and it is a real problem. Don't get me wrong. There is some media out there that is very good quality and covers every basis. However, the typical teenager shows don't show this side. MTV is a huge example of this. Just about every show they have shows some "perfect" individual and makes teenagers think that they have to be like that to fit in. The WB is not much better. The typical teenage TV show is far from reality and makes teenage life seem a LOT better than it is (or worse in some cases). There has been one show that I must say cought on really well and has lasted for a very long time that doesn't place the emphasis on looks. That show is 7th Heaven. I don't much care for it myself but do find it to be one of the better (as in quality of programming) shows on TV these days. |

It's true, but there's not really much we can do about it except realize that it's unrealistic. Besides, the obesity rate is going up far faster than the anorexia/bulimia rate, so I think a little pressure should be called for in our society. |
