It's true, but there's not really much we can do about it except realize that it's unrealistic. Besides, the obesity rate is going up far faster than the anorexia/bulimia rate, so I think a little pressure should be called for in our society.

we need more pressure on the fatarses in country for sure

that is quite depressing... but lol! its true...

over here... (my country) its a bit more pressure looking good... cause we are latins... if something looks good you appreciate it... if not... you treat it like crap...

just look at me... he he... i know i'm nice looking... though i do not like to admit but if i want something i get it.

but my frend which she is not that appealing ppl just ignore her and don't take her for account... and I hate that!

Motherfizzle society!

i do believe that Emphasis on Physical Beauty is a big problem in todays society... but it varies from generation to generation... in the early 1900's it was good to have an over weight wife... it showed that you were wealthy enough to feed her well... and that you could take care of her... gave you a status boost i guess... in todays society its about pure looks and on a guys stand point it gave you a boost if your girl is extremely good looking if she is what the world view see's as "hot"... since even today its a male driven society... it will always be a problem with how girls look... with less emphasis with how guys look... not that their isnt a standard for guys... its just less strict and more open...

Yes, it looked very good for you if everyone in your family was chubby, because in the Great Depression, most people went without food, and learned to survive on practically nothing. And I disagree with you about it being a male-driven society. Nowadays, women, too, are beginning to think and act along the same lines. It is really quite disturbing. Also, guys are beginning to realize that they've got to look good to get the girls in this day and age, and they are starting to act accordingly, from what I've seen.

I don't see what's wrong with being fit, though. I mean, it's only natural that we want the fittest mate to support our children and pass their habits of fitness on. What's important is that we realize when enough is enough.

Yes, but in today's society we are defaulting to the scalpel, not for the children, but for our own lowly values of 'beauty' and what some people call "self-esteem". It is not about being fit, it's about being the most sexually attractive. It is not a functional trait, but a pathetic attempt at making yourself feel better by falsifying and defaming your body.

Basically you need to be a surfer and a skater in today's male world. Both suck. :ermm:

To quote nearly the best debater I know:

Love is not blind. Sexual and physical attraction is natural, no one can completely ignore. If you're ugly, you're ******, because regardless of how much a girl cares about personality, if you're ugly, you're screwed.

yes... alot of women believe their guy must be strong and confident... as a protector...
which would drive a guy to want to be fit and strong... a guy just wants the girl to be sexy... in which usually ends up being skinny and having large breasts... so even if girls want a good looking guy... the guy will still be fit...

in my opinion, its beauty that bring people to gether, if everyone looked the same, would you ever fancey someone?, think about it, the only reason people meet is cause theres somthing about the person that catchs there eye. yeah most of it is looks, so i think there is a purpose in people making themselves look good

Making yourself look good and causing physical harm or alterations are 2 different things. Because of the media people think they have to extremely thin and far from healthy for people to see them as atractive. THIS is where the problem comes from. Not us wanting to look good.

Society, media (magazines especially) do put a lot of emphasis on physical beauty, and it's sometimes in the way people see others. Personally, what people should probably realise is that inner beauty counts more than what's outside. I mean, people can't help what they look like, so why not be perfectly content with how we are already? Shouldnt we just appreciate that everyone is unique?
