Ditch FC3, Get a debian based distro. Use apt-get to install Apache, MySql, PHP. Then make sure your ISP allows you to run a public server

Learn what the hell your talking about, then speak. If your ISP allows you to run a server off your current line, it won't go up a cent. If they don't allow you to run one, you change the ports that the server operates out of so they can't detect it with their portscans. Simply put, it can be done regardless. |

Your connection speed affects the overall speed of the "server" I would imagine, correct? |

It affects the speed of the people trying to access it remotly, but not if your accessing it in a localhost capasity. |

So for the most part, the speed would be affected, since not everyone is gonna access it by way of local host. |

Yes. Think of it as a direct file share you wierdos do on MSN. If there are two peeps doing it with 56k, its gonna go slow, whereas if the person sending it (server) has a T3 backbone and the person recieving has cable it will go MUCH faster. @ internet bill LOL |

Exactly. @Force8: If he was going to run the server for his own personal use, he would be using it as a localhost. If he wanted others to access it, he would need something such as a t1-t3 line. |

I'll jump the extra yard and venture to bet that he wants to make this a public http server. In which case cable CAN get the job done. BUT it will go slow for anyone that is around 500+ miles away from you. And a friendly suggestion from me would be, take learning what apache and an 'internet' server is before you jump the gun trying to run one. There are many types of server, almost all use the internet. But what you have in mind is going to be using http, which you will need to get apache for. Learn a bit more, then try. |

Well that's what I was thinking he wanted to do, is use it as a public access server. I don't know of too much reason why you would use it as a localhost (at least for me). And I don't do any fileshare on MSN. lol |

But using a cable line would be rude to your neghibors, seeing as cable uses a shared pipe, and he would be slowing everyone in his general area down because of the mass traffic coming into his pipe. EDIT: @Force: I use a localhost server environment to test Server Side scripts such as PHP, as well as test my new PHP/SQL scripts without having to upload them. |

Not necessairally. a localhost server environment is a server that is not connected to the internet but able to be accessed on the same computer its loaded onto. Most people use a localhost server environment for things such as testing php scripts and other server side scripts. I believe what your thinking of is a self-encllosed LAN with a server for storage, that still has outside internet connections. |
