Mandrake is a n00bs best friend.

It has an endless number of "Help" tutorials, etc.

I recommend them in the following order:

SimplyMEPIS
Ubuntu

Just those, the easiest is the former, the latter is better. both are Debian based, both are very nice, you'll do more in the terminal using Ubuntu. With Ubuntu you have the UbuntuGuide.org project, and a very good community behind it.

If you are up for paying for Linux, then a $20 a year subscription for free (but eay) software, and don't mind never learning linux but being stuck with just a normal OS, go with Linspire. I've used it, truely, it's easy, but you do have to pay for quite a bit...

the dvds fall under  live cds?

No. DVDs are just ROMs that hold more info. You might need a DVD for a LiveCD or you can get them for free at http://www.ubuntu.com Look for the "Ship-It section". :)

http://shipit.ubuntu.com/

Note that this can take along time. Took me 1 month and Myr 4.
