I've read about this and I like very much what I hear. I'd like to perform this on a daily basis (preferably every time I switch my laptop on), but how exactly do I defrag my computer? And is there a way for this to happen automatically every time I swich my laptop on?

Quantum-locked when observed.

If you have Windows, then it comes with a Disk Defragmenter. It should be somewhere under Start -> Accessories -> System Tools. You should also be able to schedule a defragmentation on a regular basis.

I would not do it every time your computer starts up, because disk defragmentation takes a while. Run it once a week, or once every couple of weeks.

ive only defragged my laptop in july one time...does defragging make you lose some vital information like saved files and or add ons?

No. Fragmentation occurs when Windows doesn't allow enough contiguous space to store a file. It'll split the file into pieces and fit them in smaller gaps between files. Disk defragmenting simply moves the pieces closer together rather than have them scattered.

I've always considered doing it. Not done it in 2 years.

What chances in % are there in it breaking my computer.

Slim chance that it'll make your computer inoperable but defragging may boost performance

There's no need to defrag daily because the changes will be so small over a 24 hour period. I've defragged every few months or so.

Perfect. Thanks. ^_^

I've set the schedule for defragmentation to be monthly. I then clicked "Defragment Now", then "OK" and nothing seems to be happening... Or else it's really quiet when it defragments?

EDIT:

I see it's defragmenting. :D

If found, please report missing.

I set my laptop to de-fragment a few days back, as well as my external disk, and it took for ever to do. There's nothing on it but after it finished I was using more storage space.

I'll normally clean my disks every couple of months. Planning to format my external disk soon, clear the rubbish and store fresh backups.

I've read and heard that once a week is the best.

And I think it is worth downloading this Disk Defrager and this Registry Defrager.

If you have XP, you could also download Free RAM XP Pro to help free RAM.

Running Disk Cleanup also helps free space off your hard drive (don't worry: the only things you know that will be deleted are files in the Recycle bin and internet cookies and other internet junk).

If you have XP, here are the steps:
Go to My Computer.
Right click on one of your local drives (like C:).
Properties.
Click Disk Cleanup.
Wait until it scans your drive (pretty short scan).
There will be two tabs:
Tab 1: Check everything and click OK. Then repeat this process for all other HDDs.
Tab 2: Use this as a portal to remove unneeded/unwanted components & apps, as well as to ... Read Moredelete all system restores up to the last one.

but what about the "clear data" add on for FF3? i clear data including cookies every week..as well as manuelly delete stuff in recycle bin..my comp should be running at peak performance..though i see small pockets of slowness in page loading on some days..
