Well, here's the situation: my computer has been running slow lately even though I'm just doing my normal activities. I got it in 2003, and it works decently. It's just that it's pretty old, and with all of this economy-recession crap, I've got no money to buy a new one, so I have to make use of what I have. It is a Compaq Presario SR1500NX with an AMD Sempron 3000+ running at 2.0ghz, 2gb of RAM, and an nVidia GeForce 5200 FX with 128 MB of graphics memory. The only thing left that I can upgrade is the graphics card. I've heard about overclocking a CPU through the motherboard BIOS, and I want to know if and how I should do it. I used CPU-Z to acquire the following information about my computer:

Should I overclocking my CPU, to how far should I overclock it, and how do I overclock it?

Unfortunately your oem motherboard from compaq is gonna be locked to where it wont have any overclocking features for your cpu in the bios. I know of a program that might work try clockgen its a program you can run to overclock it might work give it a shot but otherwise you probably want to upgrade.

How effective and legit is Clockgen, and is it compatible with my CPU and operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1?

Overclocking generates a lot of heat. To overclock you are going to need better cooling than comes standard in a computer. If you do decide to do it, then just make sure you won't fry everything.

...so you didn't think to just clear up the crap or even reformat and reinstall your OS?

these are simple steps that don't potentially kill your system.

I'm not as stupid as you think I am. I reformatted on Thursday evening, and since then, I've only installed AVG, Firefox, Pidgin, Winrar, iTunes, Quicktime, GunBound Revolution, the necessary drivers for my hardware, and uTorrent, and I've only been using torrents for episodes of the anime: Code Geass.
