Do you agree with him? Do you feel that we have entered an "age of mediocrity" in rock music and music in general?

Although this year hasn't been half as good as last year.

Nope. Well in the mainstream everything's gone to hell, as for what I enjoy, I think it's doing alright.

Well mainstream is crap now, what with Panic! and all that new emo crud, but there still are a couple good alternative bands...

Tommy Emmanuel has continued to amaze me, but other than that I haven't really found any particularly good songs this year, which is surprising.

No, not really. :ermm: While there is obviously a lot of bad music out there there always has been.

There's is no emo on MTV. Fact.

As well, there's always been sucky music. This is nothing new.

No. You just need to look harder.
I'm not denying that the majority of music is crap, particularly "popular" music.

There's always been sucky music but what there has been are innovaters and pioneers producing quality albums which there dosn't seem to be anymore. The great bands from the 90's (Radiohead, The Verve etc) made frankly awful recent albums and there's not many albums coming through on the underground. In fact, in rock I can only pick 3 albums which in my opinion rate 8/10 or higher which are: Sigur Rós - Takk..., Joanna Newsom - Ys and Chrome Hoof - Pre-Emptive False Rapture.

The only bad music is the one you keep listeing to and then label it "bad". People need to search for good music and stp being so lazy. It's not that hard to find a couple of good artists these days.

It's obviously down to your own personal taste and what good music is in your opinion, so to me it's the other way around. Off the top of my head I can't think of an "old" song I like. Maybe a cover, but not the original.

That could be down to your personal tastes and I know it's your opinion but that is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard. As were talking about this decade, your saying that you don't like a single song pre-2000? Most of the music around now which you like has either copied or been influnced by countless people pre-00. The blues, jazz and rock pioneers have shaped modern music, not to mention the hundrerds of years of classical. It's fsir enough that you prefer modern music but to not find a song you like is just arrogant and quite frankly stupid.

Of course I do. I said I can't off the top of my head, so if I go and look...

Losing My Religion - REM
A few songs by New Order
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones

I can't force myself to like old music. I don't care what influenced modern music because I like what sounds good to me. That also doesn't mean I don't appreciate what influenced modern music, it means I don't like listening to it.

Or maybe we just don't like living in the past. :ermm:

While I don't mind the occasional old (80s mostly) song all this Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and AC/DC worship really annoys me. Hundreds of younger bands have take what the dinosaurs made and evolved and refined it. In a way this makes the older music obsolete, however groundbreaking it may have been decades ago. What I'm trying to say is just because a band started something they aren't necessarily the best at it.

Edit:
That was a reply to Menindrag.

There is always good music about, the reason is you don't see it in the mainstream now is because record labels can't afford to go and sign hundreds of bands and push them to hell to get them into the charts.

The DIY attitude is back, but this results in less chance of being heard.
