Decline in Music Quality

It is beyond me how anyone can dislike a band just because of the time that they were mostly active.

And yes, just look around, there is a world out there. There is more than meets the ear.

Also, rock music, and anything that comes from that is more inspired by traditional African music rather than classical. Most of you would know that but you apparently like to pretend you know about music rather than actually bothering to learn.

I feel that requirements to have your own music recorded and distributed to the public gets easier and easier as the years go by, so we're bound to get an increase in musical groups (bands, whatever you call them) and a general decrease (ratio-wise) in actual talent.

And what with people becoming more and more independent, they're not going to want "labels", so they'll listen to the creepiest crap they can find and "label" that music. And as more and more genres of music appear, this opens the possibility for one to deem some work as talent and others as a sorry excuse for noise.

I believe music has been on a steady decline since around 1980 as people have been (equally) steady in their lack of ideas. What were the most interesting movements of the 80s? Glam rock and thrash metal? Techno? What were the most interesting movements of the 90s? Grunge? Numetal? What has been the dominant movement of the 00s? Emo.

I know I'm talking popular music alone, but popular music has had some quality over time. It's recently when there's more truly hideous music out there than truly great music. I find that the really good music is harder to find because everything has been done, re-done, and overdone. Some of the most interesting labels are indie ones (not indie rock, true independent labels) such as Hydra Head and Southern Lord.

Music is an art form, usually used to express someones feelings, so you can't say that someones expressions have declined in quality, can you? It hasn't declined one bit, it's just changed from the old stuff like The Beatles and what have you. I can't really think of anything else to add to this debate, becuase I don't think it's really debatable. :hehe:

I do agree with one thing in that article. The act of producing an album has become so accessible that a lot of crap gets released. While it gives people the freedom to create whatever they want without constraint, it also means that a lot of talentless hacks are churning out music that only they think is good. There are also a lot of bands that release really good albums song-writing wise but the album is ruined because it was recorded in some guy's basement.

The guy writing that article seems to think that we're experiencing some kind of musical drought where everything is utter crap. The mainstream has always been that way, but the underground always has had artists that retained their integrity. I also think that the state of mainstream music is actually improving...anything that gets away from the boy-bands of the 90's is fine with me.

Music for me died in 1998, the era of doing things again is now.

Indie is New Wave that nearly happened in 1978-1982.

Emo/Screamo - is a blend of genre's that have happened before.

New Metal - is also a blend of genre's that have happened before.

Then you get the odd song or band that really make a difference to your music collection, I could name quite a few but there's no point due to them being personal preferences.

The decline in quality of music to me means that the abilities to create something new isn't something to boast about right now, it's all premeditated bull shit with nobody with any of their own talents playing.

The music industry needs more bands that no nothing about music and are completely self taught, that is the only way I can see something new coming about soon, due to the musicians that have been taught to play by someone else already have started to copy someone else's styles and follow the mathematical rules of music. If there is a newness to how the music is created, which can only come from someone being self taught, then the quality in music will increase, but that won't happen any time soon due to the people who are in it for the money and don't actively play in the music industry.

I'll answer your question directly? What were the most interesting movements of the 90s?

Post Psychedelic (Bardo Pond, Roy Montgomrey), Goa Trance (Hallucinogen, Astral Projection), Lo-Fi (Neutral Milk Hotel, Pavement), Post Rock (Sigur Ros, Tortoise)

What were the most interesting movements of the 00s?

New Weird America (Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective), Dubstep (Burial, Skream)

Music is supposed to be used to express yourself, but you can't deny that a lot of people make music just for the sake of making music, or to make money or become popular. And also a lot of times, they're not really expressing themselves, because they're expressing other people instead by playing something just because it's "the cool thing to play" (a.k.a.: Trendy).

Hell no! There's plenty of good music out there, just listen to instrumentals or piano/techno. There is some really good harmony in today's Hip-Hop, especially with the female artists.

Once one cites Neutral Milk Hotel as 'interesting', one no longer has an opinion on the subject at hand.

I don't know if I should trust the fellow who listens to Dream Theater the most... :glare:

It's OK. Gojira has quickly fallen out of my favorite bands list, but they're still good every now and then. From Mars to Sirius has some nice grooves while The Way of All Flesh does not. I'm not big on metal anyway, I'm a jazz freak.
