A 32-bit operating system can only recognize up to roughly 4GB of memory. Typing that allows you to use more than just 4GB. Is it safe? Probably. Do I recommend it? Not really. Just get a 64-bit operating system if you have over 4GB of memory in your computer. |

My dad's computer has 3GB of internal memory, and he added 2 external GB, and his is only 32-bit. At least I believe so, all of our computers in the past have been 32-bit. |

If you have 3 and you add 2, 32-bit Windows will only see 4 all together. Even though there's really 5. |

it's one of the limitations of 32-bit operating systems. |

The 32-Bit operating system is limited to 4 GB, minus the memory from your Graphics card (4GB altogether). If your wondering why, here's the answer: http://www.brianmadden.com/content/article/The-4GB-Windows-Memory-Limit-What-does-it-really-mean- . Theres the 64-bit windows which allows you to access more RAM, up to 128 on Vista Ultimate, but it varies based on what version of windows you have. Heres a short breakdown: Vista: Ultimate, Enterprise, Business: 128 Home Premium: 16 Home: 8 XP: 128 Not that I have 128GB, but kinda makes me glad I have a copy of Windows XP 64-bit around the house in case 126 BG more accidentally gets shipped to my house along with a way to fit it in my computer. |

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa906211.aspx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension There may still be hardware limitations that prevent you from using more than a bit less than 4GB. |

RAM != storage memory. RAM is constant (at least in its total amount) unless you add more or take some out. It's memory that is actively used to run programs. |
