I believe with Yahoo you have to pay for POP access.

Maybe give this a whirl. Haven't used it myself, but it was the top result in Google ;)

No thanks. I'd rather use Windows Mail.

You're not understanding me. What YPOPs does is allow you to access a free Yahoo mail account through Windows Mail. Or so it claims.

This article explains it a little better.

Since it kinda pertain to this topic:

How does one go about setting Gmail as their default email thingy for your computer, so that when I want to export a document from Word or Open Office it opens up my default browser composing a message in Gmail, or something along those lines?

I know Gmail provides methods, I believe through POP, of using an email client to send and receive email. This can be done using Windows Mail, Outlook Express, etc. It is especially easy in Mozilla Thunderbird and if you have any troubles, you can always resort to the documentation on the Google web pages.

I hope I answered your question...

It is possible to get POP access on Yahoo Mail for free. Go to the options in your email account. ;)

Upgrade to Mail Plus so you can:

* download your Yahoo! Mail in an email client, such as Outlook
* forward your Yahoo! Mail to a different address

No not really. I was asking if there was a way that I could make Gmail, not Windows Mail, as my computer's default mail provider.

That means if I have Word open, and I want to send the document as an email straight from word, it will automatically oepn up my browser and have an open message for me (just like how mailto: works).

I meant that you can use Gmail inside Windows Mail. Windows Mail is the email client in Vista that replaced Outlook Express.

you can use gmail with any pop3 or imap email client like windows mail, outlook, thunderbird, etc. afaik you can't enable mailto: actions for the webmail version. you could try installing the gmail notifier to see if that enables it in internet options > programs tab (via ie or the control panel) but i doubt it.

I remember that my XP was able to recognize Yahoo! Mail as my default service provider; it came up as my email link when I clicked the Start button.
