What is your favorite section of an (symphony) orchestra? Btw, an orchestra looks like This. ![]() There's the wind instrument section, the brass, percussion, strings, woodwinds and sometimes the keyboards section (piano, celestra). A few to choose from, but out of those I would say that my favorite would be the woodwinds. I love the sound of the flute and clarinet. The strings section would be my second favorite. I like them all, though. Edited by Skyvale, Nov 4 2008, 07:38 PM.

Brass. French Horns in particular sound lovely. Second place is the string section. I absolutely hate the sound of a solo violin or viola (cello and bass are okay), but as an ensemble they're great. |

Woodwinds of course (have to stick with my own instrument here!). ![]() I'm fond of every section in the orchestra and together it has the potential to produce a rich sound and different timbres. It's interesting, but I find it difficult to compare instruments to one another in terms of "what is nicer or sounds better." It's probably easier for some of you though. I think each section contributes to the whole and each instrument has its own unique sound and characteristics which makes it difficult to compare for me.

Tough one. It's really dependent on the piece for me, honestly. I'm a big double bass fan, and cello as well. But a good violin section, and I mean, good, can give you goosebumps. Outside of the strings, bassoons get fun parts occasionally. Like John, you also have to represent your own roots, which for me would be the trumpets. Generally in an orchestra setting though, they aren't the standouts. |

Gah! So hard to choose. I would have to say it's a cross between strings and woodwinds. I play the violin, and that falls under the strings category, but I like woodwinds instruments just as much. |
