Icon Tutorial #1: Keri Russell
Written By: Dakota
Level: Intermediate
Layer Adjustments Used: Color Fills, Selective Coloring, Curves, Textures and Lighting

Today we are going from
Posted Image to Posted Image

First
Open up your Photoshop and create a 100x100 canvas.
Then go ahead and get your stock image, crop it, sharpen it, etc.

Second
Duplicate your base twice.
Set the first duplicate to Screen at 25% opacity
Set the second duplicate to Soft Light at 25% opacity

Third
We are going to add a color layer
Set the color layer at Soft Light and fill it with: #ecadb4

Fourth
We are going to do some heavy selective coloring. Always remember that you need and should tweak the settings so your icon looks normal and sleek. Create a new selective coloring layer.
Red - -100, 25, -15, 25
Yellow - -100, -75, -75, 25
Cyans - 100, 100, -100, 25
Neutrals - -25, 25, 25 , 0

Fifth
Create a new selective coloring layer.
Red - -100, -50, 50, 50
Yellow -100, 100, 0, 0
Neutrals - -20, -15, -25

Sixth
Create another selective coloring layer.
Red - -100, 35, 50, -25
Yellow - -100, 100, 100, 0
Cyans - 100, 50, -100, 0
Whites - 25, 0, 0, 0
Neutrals - 15, 0, 25, 0

Seventh
Create a Hue/Saturation Layer and use the following settings.
Yellows - 0, 25, 0
Cyans - 0, 25, 0
Blues - 0, 10, 0

Eighth
Add a color fill layer.
Set the color layer to Exclusion and fill it with: #0b1014

Ninth
Open up a Curves level and use the following settings to make your icon look brighter:
Channel: RGB
Output: 90
Input: 75

Tenth
We are almost done. Make a new selective coloring layer and use the following settings.
Reds - -10, 0, 0, 0
Yellows - 100, 100, 0 , 0
Neutrals - 25, 15, 0, 0

And you are done! :D

Please show your results as I want to know what you have made using this tutorial. Please do not rip the tutorial or use the icon I made from this. You can use the base icon for practice but don't claim it as your own. If you have any questions please don't be afraid to ask. :)

The actress in the icon is Keri Russell just incase you are wondering.

Ooh, nice tutorial! :D
I'd personally have made the icon a tad darker, but it's all a matter of preference. You should make more. (:
