That one guy
This MSNBC article article talks about auto-tune usage in the music industry of today. What do you think? Had you heard about this before? Do you support its use?

I've heard about this before. I do think it's alright to use it once in a great while, but artists who rely on them is pretty pathetic and ridiculous. But as it says in the article, I guess it really depends on the peoples aesthetics.

So I support it's use, but not excessively.

I agree with everything JP said. I don't mind hearing it once in a while (when I listen to that stuff that is) but stuff like T-Pain, Jamie Foxx and Kanye's new album just annoys me. There's that Jamie Foxx & T-Pain song out now, Blame It, and for a really long time I thought it was mostly T-Pain. It turns out Jamie Foxx was singing most of that song, but you can't tell because they both use that software.

I never really knew about this before you posted it. Personally, I don't care one way or the other. While it does ruin traditional singing, there will still be those who won't want to use it. The only time I think it is a bad idea is when the artist is forced into using it by the creative company who controls their song. :(

Auto-tuning has made me dislike so many artists who now use it but previously didn't. For example, Kanye West. I liked his music so much better when he was just rapping and telling stories. But now he *sings* a bunch of depressing songs with auto-tune that sound obnoxious. It really disappoints me too that the Black Eyed Peas have used Auto-tuning on some of their songs from their new album.

I don't support its use just for the fact that nobody in the music industry needs a voice now. All an ordinary person has to do is use auto-tuning and synthesizers to get a platinum selling record.

This is why the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and every other classic rock band deserves respect, they didn't need this stuff because they're actually musicians. The rock world has become filled with people with no talent but can make music because of the studio. Of course, there are many talented people like John Mayer out there, but Paula Abdul's performance at American Idol was so stupid (I heard it on Howard Stern's radio show) I almost hit my head against the dashboard laughing.

Some music that use auto-tune sound alright like Blame It - Jamie Fox, but there have been artists who over use it like Kanye West on his most recent album.

If you didn't click the article link, you probably didn't see the video that (rapper) B.o.B. did to spoof auto-tune. It's pretty funny. Check it out.

Is the sound of "Auto-tune" similar, if not exactly what makes nickelback sound the way they have in their more recent albums? if so, it sucks. it sounds soooo dumb, to hell with auto-tune, I say bring back talent >.>

It depends. There are many kinds of vocal effects and most of them are not 'cheating'. A well known example of an effectively used voice effect is Daft Punk. Vocals are an instrument like any other, and applying effects to them is no different than applying effects to guitar. Of course it becomes an entirely different story when effects are used to correct vocals. 'Perfect' vocals are emotionless ones.

That is also why many of the world's greatest vocalists aren't actually good singers. :P

I more or less agree with melancholic.

It all comes down to the application of auto-tune. It being used as a sort of vocal manipulator/effect can be quite interesting and entertaining...not unlike the vocoder. Also the minimal use to correct vocals here and there (not overusing it, of course, just slight touch ups) is fine imo. But a lot of times it seems like its used just to make the person sound like they can sing...and the person thinks they can sing to, thanks to it... completely covering up the fact that a person has no vocal talent shouldn't be what its used for.

I agree with the two previous posters basically...it gets really annoying if you use it all the time and gives off the impression that you're voice is so terrible to begin with that you need to use the auto-tune, which I don't find appealing.

Not to mention, it makes the concerts dreadful when they try singing without a track/lip syncing. :/
