Over the course of the past 2 months, I've chosen to run. I'm obese (310lbs, 6'3"ish), and I want to get fit so I chose the most primitive form of exercising. Well Wednesday was a huge accomplishment for me as I ran a complete mile continuously (as in no walking or stopping), during my 3 mile run, which I walked for a bit I'll admit. I want to run a marathon in two years. Wednesday's Run Well, does anyone else run, or have any pointers for me? |

22 stone? Wow. I'm 6 '3 and just 14 stone. And even now, I'm losing some of my "puppy fat". Don't run in the street... I find an excercise bike a lot more entertaining because you can have a bottle of water to hand and listen to some tunes as well. I did 70km on an exercise bike last week and lost 1500 calories and 3 pounds. ![]() Just take my advice.

Running is one of my favorite things to do! I'm the opposite of Lewis, I actually prefer running in the street though. Depending on where you are, outdoor scenery can be a motivating factor in helping you run further. Running or cycling on machines in a gym bores me stupid after a couple of minutes. ![]() If you're trying to lose weight though, or just generally get healthier, remember that diet is just as important as exercising. Eat little, and often, and remember to eat a good breakfast. I would also advise exercising in the morning before you go about your day, as it kick-starts your metabolism for the rest of the day meaning you'll burn calories quicker. Keep pushing yourself though and keep challenging yourself. Other low-impact forms of exercising can be good too, like swimming or cycling. You'll find they exercise different muscle groups too. Good luck!

No, I haven't really done any real exercise since quitting playing Football around 2 years ago. Good luck though! ![]() Uh, I'm about 9.3 stone (scales could be a bit dodgy though). Edited by Sith, Jul 3 2009, 09:25 AM.

Wrong advice you're giving there. In 2 weeks at Slimming World I have lost half a stone.. and how you ask? By following their motto... "The more you eat the more you lose". The more fruits and vegetables you eat, the more you lose. |

It's not the wrong advice. All credible diet books, dietitians and doctors will tell you to 'eat little, and often' if you're trying to get healthy and stay healthy. They all tell you to eat at least 5 well-balanced (that means food from all food groups) meals a day. Their motto is simply a marketing tactic to get people that like food to join their gym, or follow their program.

the more fruits and vegetables you eat, the more you poop. dont make it sound like thats all you should eat, when its not. i went from 17 1/2 stone to a healthy 13 stone following similar advice that steves giving. eat small portions of well-balanced food and dont forget protein! |

Well I just got done from running 2 km continuously! If you don't know metric, that's about 1.24 miles. Run link. (Thank you Jam.) I'm taking some advice from other people that I know and it's great to hear of people doing this wonderful activity! During today's run, I was pretty much exhausted at 1.2 km but I simply told myself that this run will be the worst I will run, and it just pushed me to go to my targeted distance of 2 km. I used to do Cross Country running at school, it was a good few miles none stop, i would normally finish in the top quarter of about 150 people. It was great, i really enjoyed it. Now, however, i probably couldn't even do a mile without nearly collapsing ![]() I'm bang on 6ft tall and 11 stone, i'm not fat, but i'm pretty dam unfit these days. Your link works fine btw ^ |

Poor you. ![]() I have never had a problem with weight...I think sometimes it's just genetic because I eat lots of fatty and sugar foods and never really put on much. o_O I Live in a city with lots of hills, it keeps you fit because even when you walk places you have to exercise by default. Good luck though, I hate exercise so I try to avoid it. You have more enthusiasm than me for sure, I think that weight will come down eventually. Edited by hipeter924, Jul 4 2009, 03:02 AM.

I should probably start running again. Without a coach telling me what to do, it's hard for me to find the motivation though. I don't need to run to lose weight, but rather just to stay in shape. I used to run cross country and track. I could probably still sprint the 100m but running a mile, let alone two without stopping I highly doubt. |
