There are many things on IF that disappoints me: not having the ability of creating a proper Trash Can Forum, not having the ability of creating custom profile fields (the Xprofile code doesn't work that great and the gender code is screwed too), not having the ability of posting globabl annoucements, not having the ability of using the Search system, not having the ability of finding member's posts (instead of topics) not having the ability of installing a good gallery like IPB's one and most of all...on IF I terribly miss the inline moderation. That is one of the best thing of IPB.

When you compare IF to the latest version of IPB you just realise how IPB 1.3 is such a old software. :( Though it's still good software for just a free forum.

It's funny...pretty much everything you mentioned is possible with SpreeBB.

Sigh...when will they learn...

Sorry, I've never heard of that software, do you happen do have a link to a demo version or to the company site?

As for IPB, well, it's anyway a good stable forum software and what I particularly like is the fact that the company seems to be working always on new add-ons and projects to make the board software better, something I haven't seen on VB or any other company forums- being them free or paid.

At the moment, IF usues genuine IPB software (though that software is dated), it's not a "rip-off".

But, IPB 2.1 (latest version) does have more features, and simply has a leg up on IF. Thing is, there is a lot more money involved, due to the license, the hosting, and a lot of times the skins cost money, too (if you want a good one). IF is completely free.

Well, you could also make a skin for IPB yourself. :| I mean once you know a bit of CSS and you've good taste when it comes to match colors it should not be too difficult to get a decent skin even if it's gradless. Then again, I am one of those who think skins aren't that important when it comes to the success of a board, I've seen so many boards getting quite popular even with a bad skin, which inculded many defaults so I probably do not see the "getting a skin" as a real problem. :ermm:

I like IPB mostly 'cause of custom profile fields, viewing all posts, seeing if a member's on or off, expanding / collapsing forums, having more than one skin, putting in hacks like shops and arcades (that don't slow down the board) and stuff.

For IF I like the skinning system better (since I can actually skin IF boards :P ) and that it's free. :|

You can add some "custom profile fields" to your board I though?

I can't post a link, as IF has childishly blocked it's name (it is a competing service) from all of its servers. It is an IPB 1.3 host, but the coding isn't screwed up, so it has many more features.

For hosting, I wouldnt trust any other website other then InvisionFree to host me a free forum. I prefer hosting my own IPB.

Yeah IPB>Invision Free, but what can you expect when IF is free while IPB is paid. So it's not like they are getting those awesome features because of the people who do it, its because they have the cash to pay for it.

InvisionFree and IPB 1.3 are very similar, I used InvisionFree skins on 1.3 all the time and some modifications work on IPB 1.3 too.
